Before Investing in the Marlins, Derek Jeter Once Shunned a Yankees Ownership Proposal

Yankees legend Derek Jeter retired from the sport in 2014. After retirement, he bought the Miami Marlins franchise before eventually stepping down from the team last year. However, he once teased about buying his favorite team, the Yankees just after announcing his retirement.

Jeter bought the Marlins in 2017

Jeter has always liked the idea of calling the shots as an owner rather than being a manager or a coach. That’s why, he bought the Marlins for $1.2 billion in 2017 just 3 years after his retirement.

Why did Jeter leave the Marlins?

Last year in February, Jeter suddenly stepped down as the CEO of the Marlins. He thought the direction of the team had changed since he joined and it was not what he had signed up for. Later, he also sold his stake in the team.

After announcing his retirement in 2014, Jeter was asked about buying a team other than the Yankees. In reply, he jokingly said, “I mean if you loan me some money, maybe I’d have an opportunity to own this team. It’s a very expensive team.”
