Deadly, Dangerous and Banned Side of Gymnastics From Decades Ago Makes an Appearance Yet Again

The ‘Dead Loop’ is a classic gymnastic move that consists of a gymnast standing on the high bar, performing a backflip and grasping the bar again. It is a dangerous stunt and can go horribly wrong if the gymnast misses his or her footing or does not manage to grasp the bar in the end.

The Ban

Shortly after the Olympic gold medallist’s stunning performance in the 1972 Munich Olympics, the ‘Dead Loop’ was banned from gymnastics and never performed in high-level international sporting competitions again. Experts pointed out the immense risks involved in its performance.

The Korbut Flip

The ‘Dead Loop’ is also known as the Korbut Flip after Olga Korbut. Olga, who represented the Soviet Union at the 1972 Olympics in Munich, was the first and the last one to perform that stunt. Olga’s performance earned her 9.8 out of 10.

The End

Later, as per the Code of Points, standing on the high bar was banned due to the risk involved. Thus, it was the end of the Korbut flip.
