25-Years After His Painful Defeat Against Frank Zane, Arnold Schwarzenegger Went Through the Same Terrible Feeling Due to a Box Office Flop in 1993

Despite spending millions on promotion, The Last Action Hero (1993) failed, and Schwarzenegger sunk into despair. The turmoil inside him reminded him of a fateful night in 1968 when he lost against Frank Zane in a bodybuilding contest.

In his autobiography, he wrote that he and the team expected lower than anticipated ticket sales because of Jurrasic Park

“$15 million instead of the $20 million we’d predicted,” Schwarzenegger wrote. However, when Arnie heard people coming out of the theater saying, “‘It was actually pretty good”, I knew we were dead. Sure enough, on the second weekend, our box office dropped by 42 percent.”

Arnold tried to deal with the despair he felt

He battled two voices in his head. “One was saying, ‘Godda**it, oh my God, this is terrible.’ And the other was saying, ‘Now let’s see what you are made of, Arnold,'” Schwarzenegger wrote in Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story.

The seven-time Mr. Olympia likened the feeling, to losing the 1968 Mr. Universe contest against Frank Zane in Miami

He recounted, “He’d(Zane) shown up (in Miami) in the best shape of his career… perfectly proportioned, muscular, and cut up.” However, the loss stunned Arnold Schwarzenegger. Just as he would feel 25 years down the line, “that night, despair came crashing in.”
