Amid the Lethal Rise of ‘Subway Surfing’ Trend Another 14-Year-Old Meets the Tragic Fate

Young people are constantly adapting their lives to keep up with the latest trends of their age, yet viral social media trends may throw a wrench into their plans. New Yorkers call it “subway surfing”: a stunt riders have attempted and died from since the transit system's earliest days.

Subway surf - How did it become viral?

The video quickly went viral in June: a group of people dashing across the roof of a moving New York City J train crossing the Williamsburg Bridge, with its 135-foot drop to the East River [video credits; NBC New York, Youtube]

Another teenager meets a tragic end

However, the similar stunt turned out to be tragic at the Queensboro Plaza station in Long Island City, Queens. A 14-year-old youngster trying to subway surf plummeted to his own death when he tumbled from a 7 train and into the rails.

Concerns over online fad

Given that this was the second fatality related to this ridiculous trend in a matter of days, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority promised to increase the security.
