Overcoming Horse Show Anxiety: Five Strategies From Equestrian Mindset Coach Meredith Brisson

Anxiety and excitement go hand-in-hand in sports. All sports involve exciting moments that can make the adrenaline rush. But when the topic comes to equestrians, then the level of anxiety it can cause cannot be matched with anything else. Following are the five strategies given by Mindset Coach Meredith Brisson to reduce the horse show fear.

Finding the connection

According to Brisson, finding the reason behind participating in the equestrian is necessary. If someone jumps in the field with their horse to become a pro athlete, then there's a chance of enjoying the sport. Without any connection, the sport can feel a burden.

Meditation

To reduce the anxiety caused from the equestrian show can be reduced through meditation. Brisson has come up with the 4-7-8 strategy where inhale should expand up to counting 4, holding should expand up to 7, and exhale up to 8.

Building a conception

Before starting anything, one should imagine their performance with a realistic view. An imagination of perfect performance can increase confidence, but it will not help reduce anxiety; a realistic vision can prepare someone's mind for any consequence.

Transform the negativity into positive energy

The mind gets more tense thinking about the complexity, and the thought of calming down does nothing but increase anxiety. Thus, instead of trying to keep the mind calm, one should try to transform the negative energy into a positive one.

Medication

According to Brisson, doctors’ prescribed medication is quite helpful for reducing anxiety scientifically.
