Hockey, as a sport, has mainly attracted men for years, but the 2026 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs tell a different story. Women also tuned into the game. But the sport is not new to them, given that the world has long had outstanding female hockey players like Hilary Knight of the United States and Marie-Philip Poulin of Canada. So, why now?

The reason is that several young women are following the NHL, and those numbers are outstanding.

Although this year’s first two rounds of the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs became the most-watched in U.S. history, what people really focused on was the substantial increase in female viewers: TNT Sports reported a 66% surge, and ESPN reported an even bigger 106% jump. Many of these new viewers are young adults between the ages of 18 and 34.

Because of this, the playoffs are averaging 1.4 million viewers per game, which is 63% higher than last year and 24% higher than 2024’s record. But this surge in popularity did not happen overnight. The success of last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off tournament created the hype. Then the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina during February gave hockey another major boost after both the U.S. men’s and women’s teams won gold medals.

NHL chief operating officer Stephen McArdle explained the surge:

“The Olympics were a cultural moment. We know that Olympic viewership does appeal to those demographics, to that female demographic, and so I think the Olympic bump that we saw was really in part influenced by that female Olympic audience.”

Women emerge as NHL’s fastest-growing audience segment

The growth in female viewership has less to do with the NHL’s popularity. For years, the league struggled to expand its female viewership, and ESPN VP of Production Linda Schulz knows why.

“We see the numbers up everywhere,” she explained. “(Hockey) is a particular challenge because sports fans tend to follow something that they themselves have participated in, and hockey is one that is not as commonplace for people to have actually strapped on skates. I approach it with, if I get a new fan coming to hockey, what is going to keep them?”

Sports analyst Darin W. White’s 2016 research showed that the number of female fans had increased significantly for most sports, except hockey. The 2015 data provided percentages for all sports, with the NFL showing the highest percentage of female viewers at 45.8% and the NHL the lowest at 36.6%.

But a Reddit user’s post in 2022 said otherwise: “[Greg Wyshynski] NHL says its U.S. female fanbase grew faster than any other league (+4.9 million, an increase of 30%, per Scarborough Research) from 2009-2021. Four out of 10 U.S. NHL fans are female. NHL’s female cable TV viewership (ESPN/TNT) in the U.S. rose 61% last regular season.”

These numbers prove that women have always been interested in hockey. However, the success didn’t come overnight.

Young stars, global events, and social media spark hockey boom

NHL chief operating officer Stephen McArdle said social media, especially TikTok, has played a big role in bringing new fans to hockey. More women than men watch the league’s famous TikTok videos. One video that went viral among female fans was Carolina Hurricanes player Jordan Martinook losing a skate blade during a game. The fun part of the video attracted many female audience members and increased their interest in the sport.

The NHL has used social media to put hockey in front of younger audiences, helping attract both male and female fans. The league and its broadcast partners have also promoted games across major platforms such as ESPN, ABC, TNT, TruTV, and HBO Max. As a result, more people are discovering the sport online and then tuning in to watch games live, helping hockey reach new audiences and grow its fan base.

And let’s not forget the hockey-themed romcoms that are making a buzz among youth. The fast-paced action on the ice and the viral success of shows like Heated Rivalry and Off Campus have also drawn fans in.

“We know that the fictional series are a gateway to our sport,” McArdle said. “We know that it opens doors to an interest in the sport of hockey, and it’s incumbent upon us to make sure that new audiences that are coming through those doors feel welcomed as they come in, and also that we help them find their way through the door.”

But expanding the reach beyond the traditional fan base was a tough task. And the NHL handled that, too.

How the NHL expanded beyond its traditional fan base

Before 2021, NBC had the exclusive rights to show NHL games in the United States. So, the NHL broadcasts were only available through NBC’s television networks. But in March 2021, ESPN agreed to a new seven-year broadcasting deal with the NHL, starting from the 2021-22 season.

The agreement gave ESPN the rights to broadcast four Stanley Cup Finals between 2022 and 2028. It also gave Disney streaming rights. So, this way, the league made hockey easier to watch for people who prefer streaming instead of traditional television. However, the deal was not exclusive. Unlike NBC’s previous contract, ESPN could share NHL broadcasting rights with others.

All this strategy helped them secure a major audience and turn them into NHL fans. Even TNT Sports executive VP and chief content officer explained their main aim behind it.

“That’s why it’s so important to meet them where they are,” Craig Barry said. “That’s why our kind of strategy is to put it everywhere in a simulcast capacity, so regardless of where you are consuming and digesting your content, in this particular case, NHL games, it’s there for you.”

Linda Schulz said modern camera technology also helped make watching hockey a lot easier for fans. For example, aerial sky cameras give viewers a better view of the entire rink, making it easier to see how fast the players are moving and how physical the game is. This helps people understand the action, especially those new to hockey.

This sudden rise might shock many, but it’s the NHL’s strategic planning of using its games’ social media and broadcasting rights to give the game better exposure. The league values all its fans and wants to grow engagement. In today’s era, that’s a tough task because the audience has a shorter span and often loses interest.

But by meeting Gen Z on TikTok and through sports romcoms, the NHL quietly built a new fanbase. The playoff numbers prove it worked.

This story revolves around suicide. If you or someone you know is having thoughts of suicide, please contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).

On May 25, four-time Stanley Cup winner Claude Lemieux appeared in Montreal as a torchbearer during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final. Three days later, the 21-season veteran was found in a warehouse at a family-owned business. At the time, no official cause or details were released, leaving many questions unanswered. Now, new details about his death have emerged.

On May 28, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement mourning his passing, reading, “The National Hockey League mourns the passing of Claude Lemieux, a four-time Stanley Cup champion and one of the greatest big-game players in hockey history,” without sharing further details at the time.

Reports later indicated that Lemieux was found at a furniture store warehouse owned by his family in Palm Beach County, Florida, where he had been residing since April 2025. According to local sources, the family became concerned when he did not return home, and his son went to the business to check on him, where he reportedly found him in a rear section of the warehouse around 3 a.m. That detail quickly became central to early coverage of the story.

The Palm County Medical Examiner’s Office told USA TODAY Sports in response to an open records request that “all public records you have requested for Claude Lemieux are exempt from public records as specified under SB 474 – FS 406.135. (2) (c).”

The citation made by the Examiner’s Office, enacted in 2024, prevents “photos, videos, audio recordings and autopsy reports related to suicide victims from general public records requests,” according to USA TODAY.

The family business, Andros Home, later confirmed his passing in an Instagram statement, writing: “With profound sadness, we share news of the unexpected passing of our co-founder Claude Lemieux,” the company wrote. “Claude was an extraordinary presence whose vision, generosity, and big heart shaped not only Andros, but the many relationships and lives around him. Our immediate focus is supporting the Lemieux family during this difficult time. We appreciate everyone’s love and support.”

Even the New Jersey Devils shared their condolences, remembering Lemieux as a key figure in their history and a clutch playoff performer. The team said, “A clutch player on the ice and greatly appreciated by Devils’ fans off it, Claude’s impact in bringing the first-ever Stanley Cup to New Jersey will forever be remembered as one of the paramount performances in team history…”

While the hockey world continues to process the news, his career remains defined by success.

Claude Lemieux remembered for rising when it mattered most in NHL playoffs

Claude Lemieux will be remembered because he was a player who showed up when the pressure was highest. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1983 and broke into the NHL in the mid-1980s. His playoff prowess emerged early, scoring heavily in Montreal’s 1986 Cup run despite limited regular-season ice time.

After his time in Montreal, he was traded to the New Jersey Devils in 1990, where his game grew stronger. He became a consistent goal scorer, including a career-high 41 goals in 1991-92, and later 30+ goal seasons. His biggest impact came in 1995 when he led all players in goals during the playoffs and won the Conn Smythe Trophy as New Jersey won the Stanley Cup.

He then joined the Colorado Avalanche and helped them win the 1996 Stanley Cup, adding another championship to his record. Later, he returned to New Jersey and won another Cup in 2000, becoming a four-time Stanley Cup champion in total. Over 1,200 games, he scored 379 goals and 407 assists, marks that defined him as a clutch performer. He was also known for his physical, aggressive style, finishing with 1,777 penalty minutes, which made him one of the toughest forwards of his era.

After Lemieux’s NHL career, he briefly played in Switzerland and China, and returned for short stints in North America before retiring in 2009. He later worked as a player agent, staying connected to the game.

And now, he is remembered for one clear reason: he showed up most when the pressure was highest, and that defined his entire career.

Tying a league record with eight points (4G, 4A) in nine postseason games, Poulin was at her best.

It was an incredible moment for the team, but it was an even more special one for Poulin and her teammate, Laura Stacey. A late-night camp with Team Canada around 2 a.m in 2018 started a special journey for Poulin and Stacey, who were both instrumental in Victoire’s triumph.

Who is Marie-Philip Poulin’s partner?

Marie-Philip Poulin’s partner is Laura Stacey, a Canadian professional ice hockey player from Mississauga, Ontario, who plays for the Montreal Victoire and represents Canada internationally.

Laura took up hockey after skating lessons inspired her love for ice. Inspired by Canada’s women’s Olympic gold in 2002, she dreamed of playing for Team Canada from a young age. But her journey was not straightforward at all.

After joining Canada’s U18 team in 2010, Stacey faced multiple roster cuts before breaking through. After showing great promise again, she made her IIHF Women’s World Championship debut in 2017, helping Canada win a silver medal.

Stacey has also been a consistent presence at the IIHF Women’s World Championships, appearing in seven tournaments and winning multiple medals, including three golds, three silvers, and one bronze.

Most recently, she was part of Team Canada’s run at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, where she added another silver medal to her international career. Today, Laura Stacey is recognized both for her achievements on the ice and as the partner of Marie-Philip Poulin.

How did Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey’s love story begin?

Their relationship began through hockey when Marie-Philip Poulin and Laura Stacey first met at Team Canada’s national camp around 2017. A Team Canada gathering in Blue Mountain, Ontario, was the starting point of their story.

Around 2 a.m., a group of players went swimming. In that casual setting, Stacey and Poulin shared an unexpected moment: they both looked up and saw a shooting star at the same time.

Stacey said. “The two of us looked up into the sky at the same time, and we saw a shooting star. Our eyes met, and we asked each other if we had just seen that. Nobody else in the pool saw it or knew what was going on, but we saw it. For the rest of that night, it was a weird feeling. I had a feeling.”

From there, their relationship went through periods of closeness and distance. After Canada’s loss to the United States at the 2018 Winter Olympics, Poulin spoke openly about being in a very low place emotionally, saying she felt like she had “let the entire country down.”

PWHL 2025: Montreal Victoire Vs Minnesota Frost March 26th, 2025: Montreal Victoire forward Marie-Philip Poulin, 29, looks on before a PWHL hockey game between the Montreal Victoire and the Minnesota Frost at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minnesota.
A few months later, fate brought them back into each other’s orbit. They faced off in a league game, and after it ended, Marie-Philip Poulin followed Stacey’s team bus to her hotel. She asked to talk in the car and eventually convinced her to go for dinner. They now consider that night their anniversary.

Even after that, they kept their relationship private while they continued playing for Canada together. As Stacey explained, “We’re relatively private people in the first place, so we didn’t really feel the need to share that side of our life.”

Years later, they confirmed their relationship publicly in 2023, got engaged in May 2023, and married on September 28, 2024. But challenges emerged. Stacey spoke about pressure from being linked to Poulin’s name: “I didn’t want people to think the team only signed me because of Marie versus what I brought.”

She also added, “I really hope in the media people see me as me… versus they only want me to stay because of my wife.”

That sense of pressure sits in contrast to what Poulin achieved on the biggest stage that same season. On May 20, the Montreal Victoire made history by becoming the first Canadian team to win the PWHL Walter Cup. Marie-Philip Poulin delivered outstanding postseason performances by finishing the season with a tally of nine goals and nine assists for 18 points despite missing time due to injury. Laura Stacey starred in the playoffs with 3 goals and an assist in 4 games and registered her first career PWHL playoff hat-trick.

As of 2026, Poulin and Stacey live in Montreal with their golden retriever, Arlo. On the ice, they continue chasing titles side by side. Off the ice, they are building a life together.

Just after the win, large crowds gathered near the Bell Centre area in downtown Montreal. Most fans leaving the area dispersed peacefully, but a small group became involved in an altercation with officers. They threw trash bins and bottles, according to police spokesperson Manuel Couture. Police moved in to disperse the crowd and deployed a chemical irritant near Peel Street and Ste-Catherine Street with loudspeaker warnings telling people to leave the area.

Footage and posts circulating online showed riot police pushing into sections of the crowd as tensions rose, with reports of chemical irritants being used during the dispersal. Soon after, the video went viral, rival fans called it “the worst fanbase and city in the world,” adding more heat to the moment.

This is not the first time Montreal has seen scenes like this after big playoff wins. In 2021, when the Canadiens beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in overtime to reach the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1993, celebrations outside the Bell Centre also turned tense.

Later, officers reported that they were encountering violence and property damage, leading to the use of tear gas. Similar flashpoints have appeared in 2026, where big wins brought huge crowds. But the win was still a big deal for the Canadiens and their playoff run.

Game 7 slips away from Buffalo after an overtime mistake sends Montreal through in a tense finish

The tension inside the arena kept rising as overtime stretched on. Buffalo looked dangerous at times, Montreal stayed patient, and both teams traded chances without finding a finish. Just past the 11-minute mark of overtime, Buffalo made a costly mistake at their blue line. Alexandre Carrier jumped on it instantly and pushed forward on the right.

Kris Knoblauch has been fired as head coach of the Edmonton Oilers. It’s a decision that stings more than most because he is the coach who took them to two consecutive Stanley Cup finals for the first time in four decades. But for a franchise that has cycled through nine coaches since 2011, it’s a familiar story as they now hunt for a 10th hire in 15 years.

The news was confirmed via an official press release on the Oilers’ official website, with assistant coach Mark Stuart also leaving.

“The Edmonton Oilers announced today that head coach Kris Knoblauch and assistant coach Mark Stuart have been relieved of their duties,” read the statement.

It marks yet another moment for the NHL side that has maintained a constant revolving door for the last decade and a half. So much so that nine coaches have sat in the hot seat since Pat Quinn was fired in 2010. Out of those nine, only six stayed for multiple seasons, with Knoblauch’s three-season tenure the longest. And they’re not the only team that has struggled with coaching turmoil.

The Buffalo Sabres are prime on that list, as since Lindy Ruff left in 2013, they’ve had seven coaches. Out of those seven, only one coach has remained at the helm beyond the two-season mark before Ruff returned in 2024. The Philadelphia Flyers echo the Oilers as they’ve had nine coaches in the last 15 years, although that figure does include three interim coaches.

It’s a sign of the times in the NHL, with results the key focus for many GMs and organizations. That’s even if Knoblauch’s firing comes on the back of the team’s most successful spell in years. They’d reached two consecutive Stanley Cup finals for the first time in forty years, even if they did end up losing both. The margins were close, but the drought for their first Stanley Cup since the 1989/90 season continues into yet another season.

It’s likely why General Manager Stan Bowman took his time and then made the decision, as Bowman attested.

“I think what I can say is we didn’t rush through this,” Bowman said, as per the Edmonton Journal. “We did an analysis, and as I said at the outset, Kris is a tremendous guy.”

He added, “So that’s unfortunate, but there was certainly no disrespect intended. We, we did a long review, and we didn’t come to this decision until very recently.”

The decision comes despite the Edmonton Oilers handing the 47-year-old Knoblauch a three-year contract extension in October. However, for Bowman, that represented what the former winger earned based on his previous season’s performances, not for the future.

“We felt that we needed a different voice to lead us to where we want to get to.”#Oilers General Manager Stan Bowman spoke with the media following the announcement that Kris Knoblauch & Mark Stuart have been relieved of their duties.@Enterprise | #LetsGoOilers pic.twitter.com/d9oRiO5V7h

— Edmonton Oilers (@EdmontonOilers) May 14, 2026

“Looking back at the way we ended the previous season, you know, falling just short of the Stanley Cup and the two seasons that Kris had with the team,” Bowman added. “It was a decision we made that we felt that he had earned that contract extension.

“And then, as this season went on, at the end of the year, when I met with the group in the media, I mentioned that we were going to do a thorough review to try to understand, you know, how we got to this point?”

By that, Bowman meant the fact that the Oilers’ season ended with a first-round playoff defeat to the Anaheim Ducks. It’s the first time since the 2020/21 season that this happened, but it echoed much of what occurred during the regular season. While they finished second, the Oilers posted their worst 82-game record since 2018/19, with a 41-30-11 mark.

It marked the first time in four seasons that they hadn’t crossed the 100-point mark, finishing with 93. That put pressure on the board and GM Bowman, who eventually decided to sack Knoblauch. However, the question remains, who’s up next in the Oilers’ hot seat?

Bruce Cassidy is the favorite to be the Oilers’ next head coach

Aside from their regression on the ice this season, reports indicate that a major reason Stan Bowman decided to fire Kris Knoblauch was Connor McDavid. The future Hall of Famer has been a standout superstar for the Edmonton Oilers. Yet despite that, he has endured coaching instability since he signed. For the unversed, the center arrived in 2015 and has seen six coaches come and go in that period.

Of the six, Knoblauch was the most successful, but their postseason failures exposed problems the team didn’t fix, which piled on the pressure. Especially as superstar McDavid only signed a short-term extension. It does mean that Bowman and company want to take advantage of that, and are now on the hunt.

The rumour mill is fired up, and Bruce Cassidy is currently the front-runner to be their 10th hire in 15 years. A former Stanley Cup winner, Cassidy was fired by the Vegas Golden Knights earlier this season. Yet despite that, he is Stan Bowman’s favorite for the job. So much so that Sportsnet has reported the Oilers have already tried to get permission from the Knights to talk to him.

That’s because, despite being fired, Cassidy is still being paid by the NHL team. Beyond Cassidy, Yahoo Sports has reported that Peter Laviolette, Gerard Gallant, and Craig Berube are also in consideration. Yet, nothing has been finalised just yet as Bowman refuses to rush the process, although time is against him.

“What worked before doesn’t always keep working,” Bowman added. “At this moment, we believe a new voice can help us get to the next level.”

For an organization chasing stability, the Oilers now find themselves searching for another voice behind the bench. As Leon Draisaitl once admitted, “It starts with the coaches,” and Edmonton is once again hoping its next hire finally gets them over the line.

On May 9, the pledge was officially fulfilled, which became the largest philanthropic donation ever made by a professional athlete in Canada. Looking back on the milestone, the former NHL star said that the money wasn’t the most important part of the journey; it was the families that were affected throughout the process.

“Everybody touches the hospital. Everybody’s been sick. Everybody has someone or knows someone who’s been sick,” Subban said. “The 10 million is a big number, but it’s the number of families that we’ve helped that is the biggest number. And it continues to grow, even past the pledge.”

The hospital confirmed that nearly 100,000 children and families have been supported through the initiative over the last decade. But reaching that goal was not easy. “It was difficult. Definitely had its difficulties,” he said.

One of the challenges was his surprise trade to the Nashville Predators in 2016 by the Montreal Canadiens. But the project was all about Montreal and its community making it hard for him to be directly involved in fundraising events.

The 2020 pandemic posed another big challenge. As during the process particularly due to the cancellation of many in person fundraising efforts and charity events for extended periods. Also, there were years when Subban was subject to criticism on and off the ice. His career in the NHL took a turn for the worse in later years, playing for the New Jersey Devils. Injuries hampered his game, and in 2022, he retired when his contract expired.

Despite all of that, Subban said he never doubted he would complete the promise. “Was there any doubt in my mind?” he said, ” No, because I made a commitment that I was always going to follow through on.”

Now, working as a hockey analyst and broadcaster for ESPN, explained that even after leaving Montreal, he never lost connection with the city or the mission he started there. “But I relied on this community and they believed in me and we never wavered and I never wavered.”

Throughout the years, some criticism also surfaced around the foundation and how the money was handled. The biggest controversy came in January 2023, when reports from Quebec media questioned whether Subban had fully reached the original goal of raising $10 million within seven years. Even another report questioned why some money collected through the foundation had not yet been distributed immediately to charities, mentioning that roughly $2 million remained within the foundation at one stage while fundraising efforts were still ongoing.

And now, in 2026, Subban directly addressed those conversations while defending the transparency of the project. “When the community and the city and the Montreal Canadiens… gave me that platform and invested in me, all I did was reinvest into the community,” he said. “A hundred percent of what we’ve raised goes to the kids.”

Subban also explained that workers connected to the foundation were not paid through donation money. “If anybody’s been paid, like my assistant, Anna, I pay her personally,” he said. “Every single dollar that was raised by any volunteer, none of it was given to anybody else…. It was all given to the hospital.”

But long before the recent hospital story resurfaced, P. K. Subban already had a reputation for being involved in community work throughout his NHL career.

P. K. Subban grew up with struggle and learned to give back

P. K. Subban was not raised in a wealthy or elite hockey family, but in a hardworking immigrant household. His father, Karl Subban, moved from Jamaica to Canada as a child, and his mother, Maria Subban, is from Montserrat. The family settled in Toronto and raised five children together.

He was raised in a large family of four siblings, including Malcolm Subban (NHL goalie), Jordan Subban (defenseman) and two sisters who played high level basketball. They lived in Rexdale, Toronto’s working-class community, where finances were usually tight. Both parents worked in education and raising five children while supporting three sons in expensive hockey programs meant careful budgeting.

So, his father used to work extra to support the boys. After growing up in that environment, it changed Subban’s mindset. He didn’t only have an interest in getting to the NHL; he also developed a great attitude about giving back. That way of thinking later made its way into his community work with “P.K.’s Helping Hand,” a fund he had established to help families deal with medical bills when their children were being treated at the hospital.

Despite being traded to the Nashville Predators and then other teams, he continued to be active in community-based initiatives. He founded “Blue Line Buddies” to foster trust between police and youth at NHL games. He also gave $50,000 to help Gianna Floyd, the daughter of George Floyd, in 2020 as the world rallied around for global justice during the protests following the death of George Floyd.

Alongside that, he continued to take part in charity galas and fundraising efforts connected to children’s healthcare over the years. His work also touched mental health support through hospital programs, including services for teens in crisis at Le SPOT Montréal and care systems for families dealing with emotional stress when a child is seriously ill.

That background never left him. It became the foundation for everything he built off the ice.

On April 5th, 2026, fans watched on as the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins lined up at the Xfinity Mobile Arena. It’s the Flyers’ first chance at making the playoffs in nearly six years, and they needed all the luck they could get. That’s when announcer Lou Nolan’s voice booms through. Lauren Hart stepped up and shocked the fans as she sang “God Bless America” as the Flyers entered the playoffs after an 8-year absence.

After all, since Easter 2019, the Flyers have traditionally had someone sing or play the “Star-Spangled Banner” before their games. Yet, in 2026, Lauren Hart stepped up and sang “God Bless America” thrice. But this time, when they swapped the national anthem for it, some fans weren’t happy.

“@NHLFlyers @NHL, why wasn’t the National Anthem performed? @ClayTravis, any idea?” wrote one confused fan on X.

For many NHL fans, dropping the national anthem for anything else is not something teams do. Yet it does exactly what the home rink’s management wanted it to do. Because the Flyers beat the Bruins and then the Carolina Hurricanes to clinch the playoff berth. It set the tone for the NHL side, and they brought the song back in the playoffs.

With Hart singing the lucky charm again in the playoffs, the Flyers got the better of the Pittsburgh Penguins in the first Round by winning the series 4-2. They have a 3-0 comfortable lead in the second round against the Carolina Hurricanes and are a victory away from reaching their first Eastern Conference final since 2010.

Despite “God Bless America” bringing good luck, it has raised eyebrows because the Philadelphia Flyers have skipped the national anthem for it. However, Flyers fans know the history behind it. After all, this isn’t the first time the Philadelphia Flyers have dropped the anthem. It all started in 1969 during the Vietnam War. There to boost morale, the Flyers began playing “God Bless America,” and it worked wonders.

LAUREN HART. GOD BLESS AMERICA. CHILLS.#IGNITETHEORANGE pic.twitter.com/CGIfx6WDJW

— x – Flyers Clips (@Flyers_Clips) April 22, 2026

More importantly, they started winning and dominating at home whenever the song was played. So much so that between 1969 and 2019, the Philadelphia Flyers won 101 games, lost 31, and drew just 5 games. A remarkable run of results with singer Kate Smith, even serenading Flyers fans in person more than a few times. But then, circumstances beyond their control in 2019 led them to stop using the song.

However, the clash against the Boston Bruins marked the perfect homecoming, and the rest is history. And now in the playoffs, that trend has continued, although it confused many as one set the stage, writing on X, “Hold up, Flyers don’t sing the national anthem???” They weren’t the only ones stunned by the change.

Fans react as Lauren Hart and the Flyers bring back God Bless America

For many NHL fans, the Flyers have sung the national anthem for the entire 2020s. They dropped “God Bless America” in 2019 after controversy surrounding Kate Smith after records containing her racist lyrics were leaked. Not just that, the Flyers also removed a statue of the singer that stood outside their home rink. Instead, the song was replaced with the “Star Spangled Banner”, although with mixed results.

After a streak of wins, the team began to struggle, and ever since, the Flyers’ management has been looking to change things up. A few years ago, they brought the song back for an alumni game, and it was met with raucous cheers. Since then, they’ve contemplated bringing it back but have always hesitated.

Many within the Philadelphia Flyers’ organisation believed that it wouldn’t fit with the modern era. Some believed that while older fans would jive with it, the younger ones wouldn’t. Then they hit upon the perfect solution: bring it back as a lucky charm for the biggest games. Singer Lauren Hart, daughter of iconic announcer Gene Hart, echoed the same thoughts.

“I think that it just means so much to the people because of the history, because everybody wants to have a little piece of magic,” Hart explained to Inquirer. “Truthfully, if I just had to sing that song and we win every game, I would have been doing it for the last 20 years.”

Yet as one fan exclaimed, “Also, what’s the deal with them doing God Bless America instead of the national anthem?” That’s because the decision struck many non-Flyers fans. So much so that most of the NHL, as evidenced by social media, haven’t liked the change.

Flyers’ fans clearly love it, as Hart gets a lot of love and even thunderous applause every time she sings the song. Not every Flyer fan, though, as one wrote, “I don’t think so, I’m a Flyers fan, and we need to sing the national anthem.”

Thus, as the comment shows, not every modern fan is taken back with the nostalgia trip. For many, the national anthem represents a key part of their pre-game celebrations, although for most Flyers, things have clearly changed.

If you want to under the Edmonton Oilers season, start with Thursday night, and maybe rewind a few years. Because when the Anaheim Ducks closed out a 5-2 win in Game 6, knocking Edmonton out before May even began, it felt weirdly familiar. The last time Anaheim won a playoff series was back in 2017. The opponent then was Edmonton. Now nearly a decade later, history has repeated itself. But this time it hit harder given that the team had reached such highs in recent seasons. And it pushed Captain McDavid to share his frustration with the season.

Right after the Game 6 loss on May 1, McDavid was honest in the post-game press conference. “I mean, it’s been the whole year. We’ve been searching for consistency all year. Obviously, we didn’t find it here in the playoffs,” he said.

Then Connor McDavid added a shocking line about the team, “We were an average team all year. You know, an average team with high expectations, you’re going to be disappointed… We just never found it.” He seemed angry, frustrated and dissapointed. After all, the series itself told a similar story.

Edmonton started well with a Game 1 win, but Anaheim quickly flipped the momentum in Game 2. Game 3 turned into a rough night for the Oilers, a 7-4 loss where the Ducks broke things open late. Game 4 went even tighter but still ended Anaheim’s way in overtime, putting Edmonton down 3-1. They fought back in Game 5 with a 4-1 win. But Game 6 never really swung their way. Anaheim controlled it early, winning it 5-2. The series was another disappointing loss for the Oilers, ending their postseason hopes altogether. But this wasn’t just a one-series issue either.

"We were an average team all year. When you're an average team with high expectations, you're going to be disappointed."

Connor McDavid speaks with the media following the end of the Oilers season pic.twitter.com/e4XcMmwRzu

— Sportsnet (@Sportsnet) May 1, 2026

Edmonton had reached the Stanley Cup Final in both 2024 and 2025, losing both times to Florida, but this time, they didn’t even make it out of the first round for the first time since 2021. They also posted their lowest percentage of points in the regular season (.567) since 2018-19.

Honestly the physical toll the players have gone through is difficult to ignore. McDavid didn’t look quite like himself after tweaking his ankle early in the series. So while the speed was there in flashes, the routing plays were not that clean. Including a miscue that led to Anaheim’s empty-net goal.

With Connor McDavid at the helm, expectations around the Edmonton Oilers were always going to be sky high. So when the season unraveled the way it did, the spotlight naturally swung back to him. That’s how it works in Edmonton, when things fall short, the conversation almost always circles back to McDavid, even when the issues run far deeper than just one player.

Connor McDavid’s short-term deal keeps Edmonton’s future in focus

Connor McDavid signed a two-year extension last October at $12.5 million per year. It keeps him in Edmonton through the next few seasons and gives the Oilers a clear window to build a real contender around him. At the same time, it also keeps his long-term future open. He can still become a free agent in 2028 at age 32, which was a key part of why the deal was structured this way.

When he signed it, Connor McDavid was clear about his thinking. “I obviously said I was committed to winning here, and I meant that when I said that, and two years makes a lot of sense,” McDavid said last October. “It gives us a chance to continue chasing down what we’ve been chasing down here with the core guys we have in here, and we have a little bit of money to work with, too.”

Even after another early exit, there is no public sign that he wants out or is pushing for a trade. But the structure of the deal keeps attention on every season. Nothing feels settled when the timeline is short, and the results keep falling short of expectations.

On August 28, 2024, Johnny Gaudreau learned that his wife, Meredith, was pregnant with their third child. But only a day later, on August 29, that moment of happiness turned into devastating news when Meredith, around seven weeks pregnant, was told that her husband, Johnny Gaudreau, and his brother Matthew had died after being struck by a car while cycling in New Jersey. The driver has since been charged with vehicular homicide, and now, nearly two years later, the case has become more complicated in court.

The accused driver, Sean M. Higgins, who was operating an SUV at the time of the crash, is facing two counts of vehicular homicide, both second-degree offenses, along with additional reckless driving-related charges. He might face up to 70 years behind bars if convicted on all counts. Early in the investigation, prosecutors said Higgins admitted to drinking alcohol before driving, and court documents have referenced claims that he consumed “five or six” beers. However, the narrative in court has now become more contested.

At a recent hearing on April 27, Higgins’ defense team moved to have the case dismissed, arguing that a private expert report suggested his blood alcohol content was around 0.075, slightly below the legal limit of 0.08. They claim the original testing may have used an incorrect sample type, “plasma that was tested, not whole blood,” he said.

Prosecutors are also citing other actions they say demonstrate reckless driving. They say Higgins did not pull over and render help at the scene, police detected alcohol on his breath, and he failed field sobriety tests.

Back in 2023, a former NFL player, Henry Ruggs III, was involved in a car accident resulting in a death. He was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in the Nevada state prison after he pleaded guilty to felony DUI.

In Mestern’s case, both sides continue to fight over technical details and interpretations of evidence; the emotional weight of the case remains unchanged. While the courtroom debates focus on numbers, reports, and procedures, the loss behind it stays personal for a family and the NHL world, something that was also strongly felt during the 2026 Winter Olympics, where his memory was still honored.

Johnny Gaudreau’s memory became the heart of Team USA’s Olympic gold run

After Team USA’s gold medal win over Canada in the Winter Olympics 2026, players carried Johnny Gaudreau’s memory onto the ice. They skated during the victory celebration, holding his No. 13 jersey, lifting it high as fans and teammates shouted “Johnny Hockey.”

Even throughout the tournament, his jersey was placed in the locker room before games, and players spoke about keeping him in their thoughts as they played. Coaches said the team was playing “with him in mind.”

Even the most emotional moment came after the final whistle. NHL players brought Johnny Gaudreau’s children, Johnny Jr. and Noa, onto the ice and included them in the celebration with the medal winners. They were placed into the team photo, standing right there as the champions gathered around them.

Meredith Gaudreau was seen emotional in the stands, later sharing photos and videos of the tribute on social media. She reposted clips of players bringing her children onto the ice, writing, “Means everything to me. I think John, too, most of all.”

She also shared a light moment about her youngest, Carter, who was watching from home. She wrote over the photo: “Carter!!!!!!!!!! I’m sooooo sorry I didn’t get you a passport yet!!!!”

In the end, the case in court continues to move forward, but in the sport he defined, his presence never really stopped.

It’s the moment every sports fan dreads, but for two Blue Jays stars, getting caught in the wrong seats at a Maple Leafs game became an instant viral hit for all the right reasons. Their ‘walk of shame’ won the hearts of the Toronto fans.

Blue Jays’ George Springer and Ernie Clement are at the Leafs game tonight, but got shown to their seats after sitting in the wrong spot,” a Canada-based digital media brand tweeted.

The Toronto Maple Leafs won 4-3 against the New York Rangers on March 25. But the hockey fans are celebrating a different incident that occurred outside the rink. George Springer and Ernie Clement were in the Scotiabank Arena to support the Leafs.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t find their dedicated seats and occupied someone else’s. The duo was enjoying the game when Springer felt a gentle tap on his shoulder. It was the attendant who came to inform them that they were in the wrong seats.

The moment soon went viral as the MLB stars were shown to their actual seats, but for the right reasons.

— Gino Hard (@GinoHard_) March 26, 2026

Both of them are ‘World Series heroes’ to the fans in Toronto. Despite not clinching the World Series against the Dodgers, the Blue Jays had a historic 2025 AL Pennant run.

Springer hit a massive Game 7 home run in the ALCS, which took them to the World Series, while Clement set the all-time MLB record for most hits in a single postseason. People were happy to see that two ‘heroes’ from the Toronto baseball team came to support the cross-town hockey team.

While some pointed out that it was a preplanned move for the Jumbotron, most fans found it funny. However, this is not an isolated event for the Jays cheering for the Leafs.

Players like first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and former Jays like Cavan Biggio and Santiago Espinal, among many others, have often visited the Leafs games. And such camaraderie isn’t limited to Toronto. We have seen multiple MLB stars supporting other sports teams.

Mike Trout is often seen on the sidelines for the Philadelphia Eagles. Bryce Harper is a die-hard for college football and supports the Ohio State Buckeyes religiously. The Yankees captain is a frequent attendee at the Knicks and Rangers games. Aaron Judge often gets standing ovations from the New York fans for his cross-sport support.

But the Blue Jays players visiting another sports team from Toronto isn’t just a fan moment. This support means a lot more for both the clubs and the sports.

Blue Jays cross-sport fan culture bridges the gap between two different sports

Even if Springer and Clement sitting in the wrong spot was an orchestrated event, it extracted the right reaction from the fans, because they weren’t just visiting a different sports game. Both the Blue Jays heroes were wearing Maple Leafs shirts with their names and jersey numbers on them.

That’s why the giant screen focused on them. And the official NHL channel immediately shared them online. While some fans took jabs at the two, most took it positively.

If the intention was to connect the fans from two different sports, they achieved the intended result. And the examples of Harper, Judge, and other players supporting different sports teams happen to do the same. It creates the right kind of curiosity among fans from a different sport. Ultimately, all these sports organizations gain a few fans.

The debate regarding the wrong seat moment being intentional will go on. But what’s important is that the MLB heroes were all-in on a hockey team. And that’s a solid motivation for not just the fans but the NHL players as well.
