Bodybuilder Who Pioneered Mass Monster Era, Once Turned Down a Quarter Million Dollars to Come To WWE, and Later Won 6 Mr. Olympia Trophies

Dorian Yates transformed how the world saw bodybuilders. In the beginning, bodybuilding was a niche interest, mainly for fitness buffs who read muscle magazines and went to local competitions. For Dorian Yates, bodybuilding was a way to stay on the right path. It gave him a sense of purpose and achievement. He was among the first to make mass-monster-like physiques popular.

The untold story of Dorian Yates

FitFacter, a well-known fitness and bodybuilding YouTube channel, recently shared an old video featuring Tom Platz talking about Dorian Yates. Tom Platz, who knew Dorian well, shared his memories of Dorian’s presence at various seminars in England.

He said, “Dorian is a good friend of mine. He was in every seminar I did in England. He was in the back. He never talked. He would raise his hand occasionally. He would eat every two hours. I’m thinking, who is this guy? But he knew what he wanted.”

In 1992, Dorian Yates had to make a significant decision. Tom Platz said, “Back in 1992, I offered him a quarter million dollars a year to come with the WWE. He goes, ‘No, I can’t. Tom, I believe I’m going to be Mr. Olympia.’ I’m thinking I respect this guy. I like his decision. I sent him a telegram, and I said, hey, you did it. Now, three years later, you did it. Congratulations.”
