Speaking with The Michigan Insider’s Sam Webb, Vincent opened up about his first spring in Ann Arbor. It did not take long for college football to show him its ruthless side. Back home in Texas, getting beaten on a route was a rare sight. At Michigan, it became an everyday reality: a lesson he had to digest quickly.

“You’re going to get beat,” he said. “It’s just how you handle yourself being beat. How you move on from being beat. That was really the only step because when I was a recruit, I really never got beat for real… But coming to college, sometimes a receiver would get me a miss.”

Jamarion Vincent had to stop treating one bad rep like it was the end of the world. And for him, that’s a big lesson to learn. The Texas native was a highly regarded 4-star prospect when Michigan pulled him away from Baylor after the 2025 season. He was ranked No. 168 nationally and No. 20 among CBs. The Wolverines had stayed in close contact with him through the DBs coach, LaMar Morgan.

There was plenty of reason for Michigan to believe Jamarion Vincent could eventually become a good player. At Connally, he was a two-way nightmare. As a senior, he piled up 5,182 all-purpose yards, including 2,066 rushing yards and 1,713 passing yards. He scored 27 rushing touchdowns and 18 through the air.

Then there was his defensive production, where he recorded 88 tackles, six interceptions, and 20 pass breakups. Jamarion Vincent also played baseball and competed in track and field. In other words, Michigan was betting on an athlete with length, versatility, and a lot of room left to grow. DC Jay Hill sounded encouraged.

“I’ve seen a lot of good traits in him,” he said. “I mean, a lot. He got work to do, getting his body right and stuff. So far, he’s better. He’s doing better than I was in my freshman year. So if he just keep applying himself, learn something, and apply and be great.” 

That may be the best way to view Jamarion Vincent right now. Promising, but unfinished. And he knew what he was signing up for. The dream is the league. The price of chasing that dream is getting embarrassed occasionally by somebody wearing the same uniform. And he has already found one of those guys.

When Jamarion Vincent was asked which Michigan receiver was toughest to cover, he didn’t hesitate to reveal who gave him serious trouble.

“The toughest? I’ll say probably Andrew Marsh,” he said, and then added another name. “But another one was Travis Johnson… He got juice. He’s fast, and he can jump. So, that’s really what his game is like. He’s fast, going to try to run past you.”

Travis Johnson is becoming one of the more interesting names in Michigan’s WR competition. The 6’3 freshman has received plenty of praise from teammates, including Jaime Ffrench, who called him the fastest player on the team. 

CB Jyaire Hill has also mentioned he’s among the toughest receivers to cover in camp. The battle for Michigan’s third receiver spot is still open, with Salesi Moa and Ffrench in the mix. But Travis Johnson is making it increasingly difficult to ignore him. Then there’s Andrew Marsh.

“Andrew knows how to get off the releases,” Vincent said. “His release’s good. He’s a good route runner, and the ball’s in his frame, probably gonna catch the ball.”

Andrew Marsh’s rise began last season when he took over for Channing Goodwin after the fourth game. From there, the hype only grew. Now he’s entering the season with good expectations. 

For Jamarion Vincent, though, all of this comes back to the lesson he learned in the spring. Getting “beat” isn’t the embarrassing part. Staying beaten is. At Michigan, he is learning that distinction a lot faster than he might have expected.

Over at Nebraska, junior wideout and return machine Jacory Barney Jr. is a total problem in open space. He is coming off a massive season where he racked up 484 receiving yards and five touchdowns on 45 catches, while adding a dominant 545 combined kick return yards. With a 12.2-yard punt return average ranking 13th nationally, Barney Jr. exemplifies the high-volume versatility this award rewards.

Oregon’s powerhouse defensive back, Koi Perich, is another name. Perich’s a lethal safety who doubles as an explosive return specialist.

Meanwhile, UCLA brings back Wayne Knight, a veteran weapon who was a previous Paul Hornung finalist after racking up multiple scores across rushing, receiving, and special teams coverage.

At last, arch-rival Michigan is represented on the list with dynamic playmaker Andrew Marsh. Although Wolverine had bad passing years, the year 2 WRs came off a legendary freshman season where he broke Michigan’s all-time freshman receiving record with 45 catches for 651 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Last year against Northwestern, he went completely nuclear by hauling in 12 receptions for 189 yards in a single afternoon. Not to mention, he also punched in a 23-yard rushing touchdown.

The path to the Hornung Award requires consistent execution across multiple roles week after week. If Inniss maintains his all-around production, he could bring home a piece of college football history that Ohio State has sought for years.

Watson has turned into an unofficial recruiter for Michigan, setting his sights directly on flip candidate Ethan Hauser. Hauser pledged to Vanderbilt back in May, but Watson refuses to let the SEC have the final say. “Job’s not finished with him,” Watson declared, making it clear he won’t stop pitching Michigan until signing day arrives. At the same time, Watson closed his own recruitment completely to lock in with the Wolverines.

The connection runs deep. Watson and Hauser shared the field as the starting linebacker pair at Buford High School in Georgia, forming one of the state’s most lethal defensive tandems. They took summer visits together, including a trip to Ann Arbor where they both pictured playing side by side in the Big Ten.

Vanderbilt head coach Clark Lea managed to pull Hauser away by selling him on early playtime and a close-knit culture in Nashville. But Michigan linebackers coach Alex Whittingham, working alongside his father, head coach Kyle Whittingham, made Watson feel like family from day one. That personal connection was enough to seal Watson’s word to the staff.

That personal bond led to a moment Watson still talks about. Down at Ann Arbor, Watson gave Kyle Whittingham his word that he would not only suit up for the Wolverines, but would also do everything in his power to pull top southern talent with him. It was a promise to help build Michigan’s defense into a national force, starting with his own high school teammate.

Getting Hauser to Ann Arbor might be a tall task for Watson, seeing how bought in his former teammate is at Vanderbilt. Hauser’s affirmations about the program have been as expressive and assertive as Watson’s statements on Michigan. He is in love with the coach and what he is building with the program, and he has even given a divine interpretation to it.

“When it finally came down to it, I felt like God was leading me to Vanderbilt. The recruiting process looks appealing, and I am blessed to go through it, but I am thankful to be done with it,” Huaser said. “Vanderbilt is just the best situation for me in all my key areas. Now that I am committed, I am only visiting Vanderbilt. I take my official visit on May 29, and that will be the only official visit I take.”

Even with Hauser committed to Vanderbilt, Watson isn’t backing off his pledge or his recruiting efforts. Watson’s pitch to his former teammate remains simple: come win big in Ann Arbor. Whether the flip happens or not, Watson has already shown he is willing to fight SEC powers for elite talent.

Watson’s commitment to Michigan

Watson made his official visit to Ann Arbor in June, but one major visit that helped him make up his mind was in the spring. It was during that period that the connection he currently has with the program was solidified.

“We were sitting in a meeting with Coach Alex Whittingham, the linebacker coach. My dad loved it,” Watson said. “My parents loved it, maybe even more than I did. My dad was like, ‘I don’t know what my son’s doing, but I’m committing.’”

Ultimately, Vanderbilt has won the heart of Hauser, and Michigan has won Watson’s heart completely. Both players are sold on the visions of their respective programs, and things are likely to remain that way.

Clearing up the air on Boston’s WEEI radio, Vinatieri addressed why Belichick wasn’t sitting in the front row. There wasn’t any hidden grudge or cold shoulder involved. As Vinatieri explained, the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach had given him a heads-up long before the event.

“Well, everybody has a busy schedule,” he said. “Coach Belichick reached out to me months ago, letting me know, ‘Hey, I’m sorry, I can’t make it in; camp’s going on and all that.’”

Vinatieri knew full well that training camp was keeping Belichick away. Yet, with a national audience watching, he couldn’t resist taking a dishonest jab and poking fun at Belichick’s headline-making relationship with 25-year-old cheerleader Jordon Hudson.

“Unfortunately, Bill couldn’t be here right now,” he said. “I thought it was because training camp had already started. But in truth, it’s because he is judging his girlfriend’s cheerleading competition.”

While the room erupts in laughter, online commentators immediately spun the comment into a personal attack. That led Vinatieri to clarify his intentions, reminding everyone that roast-style humor was the theme of his entire speech.

“If you got mentioned in my speech, you’re very dear to me,” he said. “There’s no animosity… It was meant to be fun. And if you didn’t like it, that means you don’t have a sense of humor.”

That line probably tells you more about the speech than the Bill Belichick joke itself. Adam Vinatieri wasn’t taking personal shots at old friends. So Bill Belichick wasn’t singled out. The problem was that his joke had a little more baggage attached to it.

There was a very real football reason for Bill Belichick being absent. UNC is preparing for its Aug. 29 opener against TCU in Dublin, Ireland, and the Tar Heels still haven’t settled on a starting QB. Four players remain in the competition. Wisconsin transfer Billy Edwards Jr. has the most experience. Texas A&M transfer Miles O’Neill brings size and athleticism. Au’Tori Newkirk and freshman Travis Burgess are still in the picture.

Bill Belichick hasn’t been interested in rushing the decision. Asked whether anyone had separated from the group, he said, “I don’t think there’s a leader in the clubhouse.” But time is becoming a problem. UNC can’t keep the QB competition open forever with TCU waiting around the corner.

And after what happened offensively last season, Bill Belichick has plenty to fix. The Tar Heels averaged just 19.25 points and 289.2 yards per game and ranked 129th nationally in total offense. So, ironically, the joke had a very easy target. The former Patriots head coach really was busy with college football camp. Adam Vinatieri knew it. That is why his WEEI appearance was basically damage control for a joke that got bigger than intended.

“If you look historically when coaches fail, it’s because one side of the ball is struggling,” Meyer said on August 11 on Hightop Sports’ podcast. “A lot of times it’s like I’m an offensive coach. It’d be the last thing in the world for me to go over there and try to explain defense to guys like Charlie Strong and Greg Mattison. So, you better hire someone that’s really good.”

That philosophy was not theoretical during Meyer’s time at Florida. Meyer retained Charlie Strong as his DC when he took over the Gators in 2005. Strong had already spent years coaching defense at major programs, including Notre Dame, South Carolina and Florida. Greg Mattison, meanwhile, was also part of Meyer’s defensive staff during that era. Meyer has previously described Strong and Mattison as two of the coaches he trusted heavily when building his staff.

The results help explain why Meyer remains so firm on the subject. Florida won two national championships during his six-year tenure, including the 2006 and 2008 seasons. The 2006 Gators finished 13-1 and held Ohio State to 82 total yards in the national championship game. Two years later, Florida finished 13-1 again and beat Oklahoma 24-14 for the national title. His approach was not simply about finding good defensive coaches. He wanted defensive players capable of physically changing games.

“And I would always say whatever salary pool I have, a big majority of that’s going to go to defense cause first of all, we better be good,” Meyer outlined. “I want every year was I said, just give me the top 10 D-linemen in America, and I’m personally recruiting them.”

The SEC’s biggest games were often decided by defensive fronts capable of disrupting quarterbacks without needing constant blitz pressure. Meyer wanted players who could create that disruption themselves. His Florida teams produced plenty of them.

Players such as Derrick Harvey, Carlos Dunlap, and Brandon Spikes became major pieces of Meyer’s championship teams. Dunlap recorded 9.5 sacks in 2008, while Florida’s defense ranked among the nation’s best and helped the Gators finish No. 1 in the final polls. Meyer later carried that philosophy to Ohio State.

Meyer’s recruiting philosophy also produced enormous NFL numbers at Ohio State. In total, he had produced 40 NFL draft picks over the previous six years before his departure, including 12 first-round selections. Meyer did exactly that during his most successful years.

He trusted Strong and other defensive coaches to run their side, then spent considerable energy finding players who could execute the plan. And his message to the next generation of coaches like Jon Sumrall is unmistakable: if the defense is bad, everything else eventually starts to wobble. The new Florida head coach has tried to do just that by hiring Brad White as DC. Sumrall also retained 63% of the Gators’ defensive snap production from 2025.

During an interview on August 11 with Cierra Clark, Rutledge was asked about her favorite rivalry. She did not choose Alabama-Auburn, Ohio State-Michigan, or another nationally obvious matchup. Instead, she picked the annual meeting between Ole Miss and Mississippi State, saying the intensity of the rivalry is often overlooked outside the state.

“I’m going to go a little bit off the beaten path here and say the Egg Bowl,” Rutledge said. “Mississippi State and Ole Miss. I don’t think people realize how much they actually hate each other, and some of the craziest games I have done have been Egg Bowl games.”

Rutledge has a good reason for that choice. She has worked the rivalry from inside the atmosphere, including games in Starkville, where Mississippi State’s famous cowbells can turn the stadium into a wall of noise. She also pointed to the scenes surrounding the game, saying the intensity can spill beyond the field and sidelines.

“Just the atmosphere, the environment. It depends on where it is,” Rutledge added. “If it’s in Starkville, the cow bells are crazy, the fights that are happening like not only on the field and on the sidelines, but also in the stands. That one is wild and doesn’t get enough credit for how crazy it is.”

Mississippi State’s cowbells are one of the defining sounds of a game in Starkville. The tradition is so closely connected to the Bulldogs that the SEC has specific rules governing artificial noisemakers. When the Egg Bowl comes to Davis Wade Stadium, the sound is part of the experience before the game even gets moving. Moreover, Rutledge’s description of the ‘hate’ between fan bases is especially true.

Perhaps the most famous chapter in the long, bitter feud between Ole Miss and Mississippi A&M, now known as Mississippi State, came after Ole Miss beat the Bulldogs 7-6 in 1926. Ole Miss fans stormed the field after the Rebels ended a 13-game losing streak. In the melee, fights broke out between fans from the two schools. That incident led to the creation of the Golden Egg trophy the following year. Each time one team beats the other, it gets to keep the egg for a year. And the rivalry has gotten hotter every year since.

 In 2019, Mississippi State defeated Ole Miss 20-21 in a controversial finish.The final moments are more famous for what happened after Elijah Moore’s touchdown. Instead of a normal celebration, Moore mimicked a dog urinating after scoring. That drew a penalty that pushed Ole Miss’ extra point attempt even further back. The Rebels missed the kick, and the whole sequence of events became even more bizarre. The 2026 Egg Bowl is scheduled for Friday, November 27, in Oxford.

The Vols are bound to use new Adidas gear, as they have already begun their preseason practice of this season. That pushed the school to donate its old Nike gear to an in-state Division II team.

On Saturday, Carson-Newman’s players were shown in old Tennessee Nike gear at the practice field, as per the video shared by the Division II school, obtained by WATE 6 On Your Side’s sports reporter Casey Kay.

It looks like a thoughtful gesture from the outside, but for Tennessee, it’s a mandatory move for accepting three stripes while letting go of the traditional Swoosh. And choosing the Eagles makes sense, given their location. The D-II school is just 30 miles west of Knoxville.

This season we will see the Vols with their new uniform, footwear, and get-up during road trips and home games across all varsity sports. But this partnership with Adidas marks a reunion. Before making a decade-long apparel deal with Nike, the SEC school had spent 20 years wearing uniforms after teaming up with Adidas.

Following 2015, the school inked a deal with Nike, beginning a new chapter. For extending the 11-year deal, negotiations started between Tennessee and Nike in early 2024, but ultimately nothing worked out, opening the door for other big brands. Enter Adidas with a deal that can’t be missed.

In August 2025, the Vols announced a return to its old partner, signing a deal on July 1. But what stood out to Tennessee to choose Adidas?

“Adidas recognized our potential and responded with one of the best apparel deals in the history of college sports, prioritizing Vol Nation and the Tennessee brand,” said Tennessee AD Danny White. “This partnership provides us with a significant advantage in the ever-evolving landscape of college sports. We refuse to partner with someone who does not feel the same way.”

With this new deal, we will see the Vols in their iconic orange during home games and white during road games. And the year-long Dark Mode, all-black alternate uniform introduced in 2021, also continues.

The SEC school’s opinion on the Adidas deal

In the SEC, Adidas has a partnership with Texas A&M and Mississippi State. Now, Tennessee also joins this group. But from the start of their reunion deal, the Vols certified one thing to the iconic brand: the school’s in-house creative team will actively work with Adidas’ team in designing gear.

Hensley’s death is being reported to have been caused by cardiac arrest, but the exact reason behind it has not been revealed yet. It was a huge shock for the Texas high school and the grieving Hensley family. Experiencing such tragedy, the school’s head coach, Hank Carter, finally made a statement in a team event on Saturday, August 14, as reported by Fox 7.

“We’re devastated and heartbroken,” said Carter. “(When) you lose a young person, you’re never the same, and to see our guys, our kids, and our community dealing with it, I don’t even have the words to describe it. I’ve never experienced anything like this, and it’s going to be a hard thing to process.”

For the coach who led the Cavaliers to several Texas state titles, this was the first heartbreaking and scary thing to happen in his tenure of more than 16 years of head coaching. The 17-year-old player who was expected to take a leading role in 2026 now left this world, leaving a huge void in his team and family.

Carter called him “an incredible kid.” In fact, the Lake Travis head coach compared the standout OL to a “Mack truck” because of his big size and powerful physicality, being an all-state wrestler. For the Texas high school, he was a star OL, as per the coach.

Losing this elite young talent leaves the school and student-athletes in deep grief. “Counselors are available for students, staff, and families,” as reported by CBS Austin on August 15.

However, this tragic incident also sparked questions about players’ safety across Texas schools. After inquiry about AED equivalents, the district officials found Lake Travis High School has installed those throughout its athletic facilities.

An AED is an Automated External Defibrillator. It is basically a portable medical device used during football practice to save the life of a player or coach experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.

Since football involves high-intensity physical exertion, extreme heat, and heavy bodily collisions, having an AED immediately available on the sideline is the single most critical factor in surviving a heart emergency. It has been alleged that during cardiac arrest, survival rates drop by 7% to 10% for every minute that passes without defibrillation.

Emergency medical services (EMS) usually take 8 to 12 minutes to arrive at a practice field. So, waiting for an ambulance will be too late for an effective rescue. Having an AED directly on the practice golf cart or sideline ensures a shock can be delivered within the critical 3-minute golden window, raising survival chances up to 90%.

The school’s spokesperson confirmed its staff carries potable AEDs during practice for players’ safety. Though it’s still not clear whether the young athlete got the basic treatment after facing health issues.

The Texas school’s heartfelt homage to honor the OL’s legacy

Following the heartbreaking news of 17-year-old Odin Hensley’s death, Lake Travis teammates wore Odin’s jersey number on their helmets and even stickers of the young player’s name to show support for the Hensley family and honor Odin’s legacy.

The Texas high school’s board also released an official statement after facing this tragedy and showed gratefulness for getting local support not only from the Austin area but also from across the state.

“We are grateful for the tremendous outpouring of support for Odin, his family, and the Lake Travis football family over the past several days,” read the statement. “During this difficult time, we ask that you keep Odin’s family, teammates and classmates, coaches, athletic trainers, teachers, and all those who knew and loved him in your thoughts and prayers.”

Tributes pour in for the star OL beyond the football world. A member of the Texas House of Representatives, Vikki Goodwin, paid tribute to Odin Hensley.

“I know what it means when a family loses a child, when a team loses a teammate, when a school loses one of its own,” wrote Goodwin. “I have read the words his teachers used: kind, determined, and a good teammate. A good friend. Those words do not come easy. They came easy for Odin… There is no message that reaches that kind of pain.”
