The Americans now give soccer much more respect as a sport as compared to a few years ago. The USMNT has performed quite well recently under the reigns of Gregg Berhalter. Berhalter got the USMNT job in 2018. Taking on the USMNT job was quite a challenge.

However, it’s safe to say that Berhalter has done a good job at laying the foundation for the biggest stage. The 2026 FIFA World Cup is on its way and they will play a huge chunk of its fixtures in the US. But, Berhalter’s contract expired on 31 December 2022.

It seems like the United States Soccer Federation has no problem renewing his contract, but the fans are strictly against it.

Should Berhalter’s contract be renewed? What do the soccer fans say?

2018 was a dark year for American soccer. For the first time in 30 years, the USMNT failed to qualify for a World Cup. The United States Soccer Federation figured that it was time for a change. The board fancied Columbus Crew SC, head coach Gregg Berhalter for the USMNT job. Since then, it’s been quite the journey for Berhalter and the USMNT.

The USMNT went on to win the 2021 CONCACAF Gold Cup that was held in America. Subsequently, the USMNT qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2022. However, the fans consider USMNT’s exit from the World Cup to be an embarrassing one. Hence, a majority of the USMNT fans do not want his contract to be renewed.

The USMNT has a long journey ahead!

The coronavirus pandemic proved to be beneficial for the American soccer team. During the pandemic, Berhalter got the time to individually focus on top young U.S. soccer talents like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Weston McKennie, and many more.

Coming into the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the fans didn’t really know what to expect from the U.S. Keeping that in mind, the USMNT had a decent World Cup campaign. The USMNT was shockingly knocked out in the first knockout stage by the Netherlands.

USMNT captain, Tyler Adams told NBC Sports, “I think it’s very, very important that now we use these upcoming tournaments and upcoming games to continue to build this chemistry together. You know one of the things that we’ve lacked going into this first World Cup is, you know it took us a long time to get our best players on the field and in camp together.”

It’s still a long road ahead for the USMNT. The USMNT might be the host for the 2024 Copa América. It will be interesting to see if the USMNT can take maximum advantage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup that happening in America.
