Roma is looking to strike a season-long loan deal with Arsenal for their goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. According to sources, Szczesny has been told that Arsenal’s latest summer signing Petr Cech will be the first choice goalkeeper this season and that he would play a bit-part role in the squad. Arsenal are thus looking to offload the Poland international and Roma have initiated talks with the club over his transfer.

Szczesny was a part of Arsenal’s  successful FA Cup winning campaign and played all but one of their matches in the competition. The young Polish insisted that he was ‘here to stay’ after his side thrashed Aston Villa 4-0 in the final but after Cech’s arrival he becomes Arsenal’s 3rd choice goalkeeper behind current number one David Ospina.

Wenger too suggested that a departure from the goalkeeping department could be on the cards after signing Petr Cech from Chelsea.

“We have to see if they’re happy as well. We’ll see what happens”, he said.

After winning the Golden Glove for the 2013/2014 season in the Premier League, Szczesny had an awful season by many standards, managing to keep only 3 clean sheets in 17 appearances in the Premier League. The turning point though, was the first fixture of 2015 when the Gunners faced Southampton and were quite easily brushed aside in a 2-0 defeat at St. Mary’s.

The goalie’s career took a major blow after controversies and his inability to win back his place in the team. Roma offer Champions League football and a fight for the Championship in Italy. A successful campaign in Italy might tempt Wenger to give the young Polish another shot.

Szczesny was destined for success and has been forever dubbed as the solution to Arsenal’s goalkeeping woes. But with the void now filled by Petr Cech, a move is what would favour all parties.
