With progress stalling on a move for Newcastle’s dynamic Moussa Sissoko, Arsene Wenger is said to be ready to move for long-term target William Carvalho, according to The Telegraph. Manchester United have also been linked with a move for the Portuguese midfielder, who currently plays for Sporting Lisbon.

Regarding his depleted squad, Arsene Wenger came out and said, “If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with [Jack] Wilshere, [Aaron] Ramsey and [Mikel] Arteta, we’re a bit short at the moment in midfield.”

With Arsenal succumbing to a 2-0 loss to Southampton with a bench that reeked of inexperience, Wenger may have to pay above the odds to secure a player that may help Arsenal push for a top-four finish.

Wenger had earlier hinted that he will try to purchase players in the January window, provided they are made available by their respected clubs.

It is rumoured that he is willing to part with up to £25.5m to sign Carvalho.
