2019 Prize Money Leaders In Tennis

After a sluggish start of the 2019 season, where Rafael Nadal happened to be title-less until May 2019, he concluded the season in the best possible manner with a year-end World Number one ranking and later tops the list of prize money leaders in tennis.

Nadal’s total prize money sums up to $16,349,586, which includes his share of the ATP Tour bonus pool and it is highest in 2019. Also, Rafael Nadal had a few weeks of injury-hiatus this year. He withdrew from Indian Wells and then showed up for Monte Carlo Masters.

After his US Open glory, Rafa’s wrist was inflamed pertaining to that he called off his Asian Swing. Later in Paris, he withdrew from the finals due to abdominal injury. Acing against all the odds, Nadal concluded his season as the World Number one tennis player and supported Spain to clinch the Davis Cup 2019 title.

Since 2015, Nadal’s 2019 prize money is the highest in one calendar year. Djokovic amassed three out of four Grand Slams in 2015 and drew a whopping sum of $21,646,145 from the ATP circuit.

Followed by Rafa, the Serbian, Novak Djokovic takes the second spot. Djokovic has drawn $13,372,355 from the ATP Tour after clinching five-titles this year which include his Slams in Melbourne and London.

The Swiss legend, Roger Federer seals the third spot on the prize money list with a total amount of $8,716,975. Federer won three ATP 500 titles, Miami Open title and in July he conceded a painful defeat at Wimbledon finals.

Dominic Thiem

Post the Big Three’s dominance, the French Open and ATP World Tour Finals finalist, Dominic Thiem held whopping five titles this year. His title count ties with Djokovic. The Austrian is placed after Federer in the list with $8,000,223, also Thiem defeated Federer in all their three meetings this year.

Daniil Medvedev

The Russian, Daniil Medvedev, who reached six straight finals in the summer, including at the US Open, is fifth in the list of prize money leaders in tennis. His amount aggregates to $7,902,912. He is also declared as the most improved player in 2019 by the ATP.

Big Three’s Career Prize Money Summation

The category of career prize money list, Novak Djokovic tops the list with $139,144,944 in total. In 2016, the Serb was the first tennis player to enter a $100 million prize money club after he pulled off the ‘Nole Slam’. The on-court earnings of Federer in his entire career add up to $129,231,891 and for Nadal, it’s $119,601,561.

In 2019, a total of 54 ATP players won $1 million or more, while 45 of them won $1 million or more from singles alone. The Wimbledon champions and year-end doubles World Number ones, Robert Farah, and Juan Sebastian Cabal from Colombia were the only two players to win more than $1 million from alone from the doubles discipline.

WTA’s Prize Money Leaders in Tennis

Moving on to the women’s side, World Number one, Ashleigh Barty of Australia takes the top spot on the women’s list of prize money leaders in tennis with $11,307,587 (it includes her money earned from singles and doubles circuit). She won her maiden Slam in Paris this year, before that she was Miami Open champion.

Barty concluded the year by clinching the WTA Finals title in Shenzhen and that victory alone earned her a record-breaking payout of $4.42 million.

Wimbledon champion of 2019, Simona Halep drew a salary of $6,962,442 from the WTA circuit. She is placed on the second spot in the list of prize money leaders in WTA. This year she reached the finals in Madrid and Qatar and was the semi-finalist at the Paris major.

After clinching the Australian Open 2019 title, Osaka’s run on the WTA Tour has a downward graph and later, in her hometown of Osaka she was back to her winning ways and also held the title in Beijing. Naomi takes the third spot and her on-court earnings sum up to $6,788,282 this year.

What a season it has been for the teenage phenom, Bianca Andreescu. She won big titles in Indian Wells and Toronto and later held the US Open title in New York by defeating Serena Williams in the finals. With the fourth position on the list of prize money leaders, her WTA earnings aggregate to $6,504,150.

The Ukrainian, Svitolina reached two Slam semifinals this year and she was also the finalist at WTA Finals 2019. She did not win a title this season, and she takes the fifth spot on the prize money leaders list and took home $6,126,335.

The Czech star, Pliskova won four titles this year. She was triumphant in Brisbane, Rome, Eastbourne, and Zhengzhou. She earned $5,138,077 from the WTA Tour and sealed the sixth spot on the list.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion, Serena Williams concluded the year with $4,310,515 in prize money. She last played at US Open 2019 finals and before that, she was a finalist in Toronto. Her career earning from the WTA Tour aggregate to $92,543,816.
