16 players from the 182 are marquee players with a base price of INR 2 crore each. It is likely kick off a bidding war between the franchises. Ben Stokes, the IPL 2017 auction’s biggest name will once again be one of the major targets. All this is despite his recent off-the-pitch troubles. Their other option could also be, turning to proven T20 game-changers like Chris Gayle, Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Shakib Al Hasan and Glenn Maxwell among others.
In terms of openers, Indian marquee options include Shikhar Dhawan, Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane. But, they can still be retained by their respective franchises via Right To Match (RTM) card.
If teams are looking for experienced Indian players, the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh can be considered. However, Chennai Super Kings lost their RTM for Ashwin when they opted for Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja. But Dhoni said on Friday that they were willing to fight to get Ashwin back in the ranks. Dhoni also confirmed that they are targeting former players Faf du Plessis and Dwayne Bravo.
Dhoni has expressed his desire to bring Ravi Ashwin back to CSK and they will be targeting him in the 2018 IPL Auction
Regarding Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad have yet to reveal their plans. Apart from the usual suspects, teams could also explore unconventional but solid T20 options in Kane Williamson and Joe Root in the 2018 IPL Auction draw. The Englishman will make his IPL auction debut this year. Among the 16 marquee players, Mitchell Starc is capable of leading any of the eight bowling attacks. Signing him would be an all-out war between the franchises.
Aside from the marquees, there are a few others who are part of the INR 2 crore club. One of them is Yuzvendra Chahal, a player who will be sought after by multiple franchises in the 2018 IPL auction. He has done a mighty respectable job for RCB for a few years and it even earned him a national call-up in 2017. Others players include KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Kedar Jadhav, Dinesh Karthik, Robin Uthappa and Karn Sharma. The above-mentioned have considerable IPL experience.
