“A Very Broken System”: Vasek Pospisil Criticizes ATP Player Council

With the 2020 offseason in motion, tennis players and officials have a lot to ponder on. World No.1 Novak Djokovic and Vasek Pospisil will also be busy with their new players’ association, PTPA. With a lot of details about the association being murky at the moment, the co-heads will try to establish PTPA’s credentials during the off-season and rival the ATP Player Council.
In a recent interview with Tennis.com, Pospisil spoke about PTPA and the main objective of the players’ body. He said: “The whole purpose of the PTPA is strictly to organize and unite the players, and be represented in a proper way where we actually have the ability to impact major decisions that are made that affect our livelihoods.”

Vasek Pospisil asks questions to ATP Player Council
He also alleged that the ATP Player Council functions with a broken system and he experienced it when he had joined the council. Further, Pospisil asked some tough questions pertaining to the ATP.
“Why are we having all these player issues? So many players constantly complaining about how things are run—everything from the revenue share to representation to just you name it. So I joined the council and I realized that it was a very broken system.”

Recently, Pospisil and Djokovic were nominated by some players to rejoin the ATP Players Council, but the latest ATP rule forbids an active player in the council from joining other associations.

Pospisil took more jabs at the ATP Players Council, calling it ineffective and having a minor impact.
“Until the PTPA is fully established, the ATP Player Council still is currently the only platform where you can represent players at some capacity. Quite ineffectively, but it is however minor of an impact you can have.”

The PTPA has a lot of support from the lower-ranked players. Most of the higher-ranked players have rejected the idea of PTPA. Further, the participation of WTA players is a hot topic that Djokovic and Pospisil will surely consider.
