Innersloth’s Among Us saw an epic boom in its popularity in 2020 due to the global lockdown. The game, originally released in 2018, caught the public eye as an ever-growing list of streamers and YouTubers began playing it. Soon, its popularity reached such heights that the game became a part of daily conversations.
Among Us is a game of collaboration and deception. Crewmates must identify and eject the impostor, whose aim is to kill the crewmates. During the lockdown, this game became one of the most fun methods of spending time with your friends and family while isolating in their respective homes.
Now, recent reports suggest that Among Us is the most popular game in the world, in terms of monthly players.
According to a recent report shared by the research firm Nielsen, Innersloth’s party game had approximately half a billion active users in November. The game is available for download on Android and iOS devices, as well as PC. However, it saw the most downloads on the Android and iOS devices, closing up to approximately 42 million downloads. Stats suggest that this constitutes about 70 percent of its lifetime downloads.
A major part of the game’s success can also be credited to Twitch. Not very long ago, US Representative Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez streamed the game on her channel, drawing the third-highest views to a single channel in October. This sudden boom in popularity has encouraged Innersloth to expand the game to more platforms.
Additionally, many game developers came up with different mods of the game, bringing innovative twists to the fan-favorite game. Popular YouTubers such as MrBeast and NoahFromYouTube streaming multiple games of Among Us on their respective channels has also played a huge role in its popularity.
Furthermore, Fortnite’s latest LTM, ‘The Spy Within’, is also inspired from Innersloth’s 2018 release.
In comparison with its popularity, Among Us has a very modest revenue. This can primarily be because most of the downloads are on Android and iOS devices, where the game is available for free. The PC version of the game, too, can be bought for a meagre price of $4.99 (£3.99).
Innersloth recently made the game available for Switch (£3.89/$4.99), and Xbox Game Pass for PC as well.
According to SuperData,
“Since Among Us is not heavily monetized, earnings figures are comparatively smaller.”
