Former world No.1 Andy Murray extended his career after undergoing a hip resurfacing surgery in January and returned to the ATP Tour in June. However, Murray admits that his return to tennis means that he will have to undergo a full hip replacement in the future.
Andy Murray was all set to retire from professional tennis after the Wimbledon Championships 2019. However, the Briton opted for hip resurfacing surgery in the hope of playing tennis again without any pain.
The three-time Grand Slam champion is fully aware that his hip resurfacing operation will last till his fifties and he will require a full replacement operation as the resurfacing procedure cannot be performed more than once.
“There is always a risk in sport,” Murray told the Daily Mail. “The prosthesis that I have in there they say should last 20 or so years – then I would have a full hip replacement. You can’t resurface your hip twice.
Murray made a winning return from the surgery six months later as he won the doubles title at the Queen’s Championships partnering with Feliciano Lopez. The 32-year-old further tested his hip by playing doubles at five events before returning to play singles at the Cincinnati Masters in August.
Andy Murray further added: “The risk in playing is that it lasts less time than it would otherwise and I would need a hip replacement sooner.”
Andy Murray further explained that playing tennis at a high-level further increases risk and so the prosthesis might not last long. He said: “And with playing sport at a high level, that risk is higher. It might mean the operation or the prosthesis won’t last as long. That is why doctors and stuff are cautious.”
“For surgeons and doctors, they don’t want to be the person who says, ‘Go back and do this, absolutely you’ll be fine’, then have it break after two years and there needs to be a full hip replacement,” Murray concluded.
