Angelique Kerber: “There Have Always Been Ups and Downs”

Angelique Kerber asserted that she is ready to move forward as she reflected on her inferior performance at the Wimbledon Championships 2019.

Kerber conquered the Wimbledon title in 2018 after defeating Serena Williams in the finals. However, the defending champion, crashed early this time around in the second round against the unpredicted American Lauren Davis 6-2, 2-6, 1-6.

As a result, Angelique Kerber dropped from fifth to the thirteenth position in the Women’s Tennis Association leaderboards.

Angelique Kerber said on social media channels that she feels different from the last year but she is still part of the same journey. She wrote, “This time of year feels very different compared to last year, but it’s still part of the same journey.”

She further continued and said, “Whether you‘ve won or lost the last match- it‘s done, it‘s over and it can‘t be changed. It‘s about the lessons you learn from both outcomes that will determine your path.”

Angelique Kerber accepted that ups and downs are a part of an athlete’s career. However, she explained that she has learned to deal with failures and move forward.

The 31-year-old further added, “There have always been ups and downs, twists and turns in my career that I accept as part of my story as an athlete. Even more, I‘ve learned to deal with it and embrace the challenge of moving forward.”

Angelique Kerber said after her defeat, “I was trying to find my game the whole match, actually. I was not really feeling good from the beginning. I don’t know why. The energy was not there. I tried.”

She further expressed her disappointment and said, “Of course I’m disappointed. It’s not the way I would like to finish here or to play here. But you sometimes have days like that. You have to accept it. You have to learn from it, try to forget this as soon as possible.”
