Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens Lift The US Open 2019 Doubles Title

In the US Open 2019 doubles finals, Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens defeated the Australian-Belarusian pair, Ashleigh Barty and Victoria Azarenka 7-5, 7-5. It was the first Grand Slam title for the fourth seed pair of WTA.

The Belarusians, Victoria Azarenka, and Aryna Sabalenka had an opening-round popcorn match in the US Open 2019 singles draw, and the ninth seed, Sabalenka prevailed over her compatriot, Azarenka in three sets.

In the doubles finals, they happen to be opponents again and this time, it was once again the Belarusian, Sabalenka trouncing upon Azarenka. The fourth seed pair of Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens held the opening set after both the teams traded breaks.

In the second set, the pair of Barty and Azarenka had perfect chances to take a 5-3 lead. However, with qualities winners from Mertens from the baseline, scored out their break points and halted them from leading in the second set. With Sabalenka leaping in the volleys on deuce, they settled the set at 4-4.

US Open 2019

Error-strewn tennis from Azarenka and Barty’s team at 5-5. They were leading 40-15 the game with Azarenka on serve. On deuce, Azarenka committed unforced errors by netting and widening the ball, and consequently, Sabalenka and Mertens lead by 6-5 in the second set. Later, the went on to pull off their Grand Slam in New York with 7-5, 7-5 win over the eighth seeded pair.

This year, Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens claimed the Sunshine Double in doubles. They made it to semifinals at French Open 2019 and quarterfinals at Wimbledon 2019. Now, they are champions at US Open 2019. They also won the title in Hobart.

Last year, the singles World Number two, Ashleigh Barty was the US Open doubles champion and she was in tandem with the American, CoCo Vandeweghe.
