All You Need to Know About Denis Shapovalov’s Nationality, Family, Where He Lives, and More

The fresh new crop of men in professional tennis is brimming with talent, skill, class, and charisma. And assuredly, all of this also describes the rising star from Canada, Denis Shapovalov. At only 22, he has already touched the ATP Top 10 Rankings and reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal in Wimbledon.

Born in Tel Aviv, a city on the Mediterranean coast of Israel, Shapovalov started playing tennis at the age of five. Today, he is one of the most aggressive baseliners with an eye-catching playing style.

But while tennis fans might know about his breakthrough in the 2017 Rogers Cup where he defeated Juan Martin del Potro and Rafael Nadal, they know very little about his personal life. So here a few things about the Canadian heartthrob Denis Shapovalov.

Who are the parents of Denis Shapovalov?

Denis, aka Shapo, was born to Viktor and Tessa Shapovalov. Interestingly, his mother, Tessa, is a former professional tennis player who was part of the Soviet Union National Tennis Team. The couple moved to Toronto, Canada, when Shapovalov was only nine months old.

Naturally, it was the mother who passed down her tennis genes to her son. Tessa began coaching Denis from the age of five and later opened a coaching academy, Tessa Tennis, to support her son. She built the academy in the city of Vaughan, Canada.

Hence, Denis began his professional career representing the country of Canada. Currently, he lives in Nassau, Bahamas, but he still holds his Canadian citizenship.

Moreover, Denis also has an elder brother, Evgeniy. Since his father is a Greek orthodox and has spent most of his life in Russia, Denis also speaks fluent Russian. Apart from that, he speaks English.

Despite the growing popularity, the young Canadian has remained humble and has grown massively on and off the court. His idols growing up were Roger Federer and Andy Murray, and he beat the latter in the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

Denis Shapovalov is dating Swedish tennis professional Mirjam Bjorklund. The couple regularly updates their fans on social media with their pictures.

Denis also has a strong connection with music. In 2020, he even released two rap songs, ‘Night Train’ and Drip.’ And most importantly, if not for becoming a tennis player, he would have become an ice hockey player.
