“Happy That It Paid Off”: David Goffin Ends Three Year Drought by Winning the ATP 250 Montpellier 2021

World No.15 David Goffin emerged as the winner of the ATP 250 Montpellier Open 2021. The Belgian player played really well and managed to win a title after more than three years. He defeated Roberto Bautista Agut in the finals to seal the title. The final scoreline of the match was 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.
What was really phenomenal about David Goffin was that he was able to keep his calm in the finals. Although he lost the first set against Roberto Bautista Agut, he made an incredible comeback to win the other two sets easily and thus, won his fifth title.
In the post-match interview, Goffin revealed that it was never easy to win tournaments. He mentioned that in order to grab trophies, one needs to fight till the very end.

“It’s never easy to win tournaments. This is my fifth and every tournament that I’ve won was very special,” began Goffin. “I had some opportunities, I’ve had matches [where] I had zero chance to win in the final. Sometimes you take it, sometimes not. I’ve played some finals, but you need to continue, you need to improve your game, you need to fight and I’m happy that it paid off at the end.”
Goffin also claimed that it was a really special feeling for him to win a tournament after three years.

Goffin highlighted that a final at any tournament is always different than the other matches. He believes one has to give his 100% in order to win any tournament.
“A final is always different. You have to just go for it,” said Goffin. “You’ve already [had] a good week and you’re playing the final. It’s the last match of the week, so you have to give everything to try to win the trophy. Otherwise, it’s tough to win a tournament,” added the Montpellier Open 2021 champion.

The World No.15 player also lauded Agut for his efforts and said that he was one of the toughest opponents to face in the finals.

“He played really well the whole week and I always know against Roberto that he’s a very tough opponent. [He’s] one of the biggest fighters and one of the best players in the world, so it’s always tough,” concluded Goffin.
