“Haven’t Done Anything for a Long Time”: Roger Federer Casts Huge Doubts Over His US Open 2021 Participation

Swiss maestro Roger Federer, who recently withdrew from ATP Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati, has now raised doubts regarding his US Open 2021 participation. Although he is yet to meet the doctors and team to finalize the decision, he updated the status as “uncertain.”
Notably, the 20-time Grand slam champion hasn’t started any training so far. In addition, Federer is still amid his foot recovery following his Wimbledon quarterfinals loss. Thus, it seems highly unlikely that the five-time US Open champion will compete in New York this year.
On his physicality, Federer said, “It works. I was on holiday. I haven’t done anything for a long time because of my knee. After Wimbledon, I had to let everything sink in first.” (All quotes are translated from German to English via Google Translate).

Roger Federer on US Open 2021 participation
Once upon a time, Roger Federer won five consecutive US Open titles from 2004 to 2008. Since then, he hasn’t won any in New York.
Additionally, the hype of the first 21-time Grand Slam winner grew aggressively when Novak Djokovic equaled Federer and Rafael Nadal at 20. However, one of the three may not feature in the race, at least for 2021’s final slam.

“This week, I will meet my doctors and my team, and then we’ll see what happens next. At the moment, everything is still a little uncertain,” Federer said.
Considering this, and the break after Wimbledon, going directly into US Open would be inadvisable for the Swiss maestro. However, it all depends on his meeting with the doctors.
Similarly, Spaniard Nadal also left for Spain from Toronto to see his doctor about his foot injury. Even his decision for the year’s last major tournament relies on medical advice.

Coming back to Federer, he would most certainly need match time before traveling to New York. Above all, he should be willing to play his heart out in the center court of the Flushing Meadows.
Hence, for now, Djokovic is the sole Big Three member who is physically most likely to play at the US Open. It would be far-fetched but intriguing to see either Federer or Nadal stop him from his Calendar Slam.
