Roger Federer seemed as though he was an immovable object during the early years of his career. His performances showed such utter dominance that any player would go all out physically and mentally trying to defeat him. He eventually met his unstoppable force in Rafael Nadal, who would go on to beat Federer in the 2008 Wimbledon final, breaking his streak.

While many tennis fans saw the human side of Federer, the Swiss Maestro himself was devastated by the defeat. Losing a winning streak in his best arena likely made it even worse, and the 20-time grand slam champion opened up on his defeat in a recent interview.

In an interview with GQ Sports, Roger Federer was told by the interviewer that he could relate more to him in the second half of his career because he seemed more human at the time because he lost some matches and was not on a winning streak like before.

To which Federer responded, “I think in 2008 when I lost to Rafa [at Wimbledon], I was devastated after losing that match. But then I would come to the States a month later and people are still talking about it, ‘So you lost. But seeing the human side come out of you and we’ve seen you win so much. So, seeing you on the losing side felt really different and special. Federer 2.0 has entered the building type thing that, okay, now this was the one that actually loses also some, and that’s how he is.”

Apart from the thousand things that the Swiss maestro is involved with, he is also working with Amazon for a documentary with Joe Sabia and Asif Kapadia.  While asked about the reason for doing the documentary, Federer replied, “Well, I didn’t, to be honest…Then when the end was coming nearer, and once the Laver Cup was set, the question was: Well, do we want to have anything documented? Just maybe more for my own story, for my own kids, for friends and coaches and my team.”

However, at the request of Joe Sabia, Federer agreed to watch the one-hour screening of his in-making documentary that is “ super emotional, hard-core to watch.” He further added: “So I watch it with Mirka and Tony [Godsick, Federer’s agent] and we’re like, Oh, my God, wow.

Federer went on to describe his feelings while watching the screening: “I cried like six times. I just think there’s so many moments where you feel that suffering…You see the end coming and there is this end point, but it’s beautiful. But it’s just for me also probably emotionally going through it, it’s hard.”
