A match point can make or break a tennis game. If you know the rules of this sport, everything depends on the two players playing the match with only one goal in mind, which is to achieve a victory. Having a match point changes the situation and decides the flow of the match, but there are times when things go wrong. Did you know that even the greatest players of this era were once victims of match-point situations?
Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic have faced problems while claiming victories even after having a match point. In this unfortunate record, the Swiss legend has not only topped the field but has also eluded the recent Davis Cup heartbreak of his rival, Djokovic.

How many times have Roger Federer and the Big 3 faced defeat with a match point?
There are traces of history left behind by Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, which states that there were times when they were not able to make it with a match point. Although situations like these are rare for the Serb and the Spaniard, Federer was someone who faced defeat the most in his career.

Recently, data came to light that displayed how the 42-year-old Swiss tennis legend is someone who has lost 24 matches even after obtaining at least one match point. While the other Big 3 players in total have lost half of his matches, that is, Nadal and Djokovic together have faced these kinds of situations only 12 times.
Among them, the 37-year-old has faced defeats eight times following similar circumstances; in addition, the current world number one only has four such defeats under his name. Even though Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles, from 2000 to 2021, there have been instances when he had not one but even two or three match points, giving him an advantage in his game.
But unfortunately, things didn’t work out as planned, and Federer gave his opponent an edge even after carrying a point that could have changed the game. However, it won’t be wrong to say that even in this unfortunate record, it’s Federer who has taken a step ahead of his Serbian opponent. On the other hand, the 24-time Grand Slam champion has only faced this situation four times, and one of these defeats came this year during the Davis Cup semi-finals, where he lost the game even after having three match points.

Novak Djokovic’s Davis Cup semi-final loss to Jannik Sinner
Even after carrying his best form for the entire year, the world’s number-one-ranked tennis player faced a heartbreaking loss in the Davis Cup semi-finals. The Italian tennis player shocked his opponent and the entire tennis world by beating him twice in a day with two thrilling face-offs. The first one was a single match, where Jannik Sinner came back from a set down to claim a victory as he saved two match points in the final set.
While that was not enough, he also broke Djokovic’s serve in the last game. Along with this, not only did he defeat the 36-year-old player who had a match point, but he also became the first player to beat him in a Davis Cup singles match since Juan Martin del Potro in 2011.
