21YO Swiss Tennis Wonderkid’s US Open Feat Puts Him Above Roger Federer as He Overcomes a 24-Year National Drought

Dominic Stricker is all the rage this US Open for fans of Swiss tennis. After Roger Federer retired and Stan Wawrinka’s fall from the top 40, many tennis followers were devoid of any hope of another Swiss star. Stricker is someone who has given them much hope. The young player went pro not long ago and is already making headlines. He recently achieved a record that even puts him above his Swiss predecessors.

Stricker was able to achieve his current feat because of his biggest defeat of this year. But this is not the only time the player has managed to attain a record not held by Federer. His first feat came in 2021, which saw him surpass the Swiss Maestro in one aspect.

The Swiss Roger Federer has created records that will blow the minds of many. Titles, weeks at Number 1 and more, Federer has seemingly attained all the records a player could. After his retirement, not much hope was left for Swiss tennis. But a young ace has managed to create some expectations for Swiss nationals and those of Federer worldwide.

Dominic Stricker is playing beyond expectations in the US Open. The 21-year-old wonderkid has managed to go past the qualifiers into the round of 16 while beating a top 10 player, Stefanos Tsitsipas, on the way. His stint reveals a new record that even the 20-time grand slam champion could not achieve. “Dominic Stricker is only the second Swiss qualifier in the Open Era to reach a men’s R16 at a Grand Slam, after Lorenzo Manta – Wimbledon 1999. Stricker and Manta both claimed top-10 wins on their way to that stage. Hop!

In 2021, Stricker turned pro and aimed to revive the hopes of Swiss fans. The 18-year-old player eyed big records and performed to the best of his abilities on the court. One of his first championships was the 2021 Gstaad Open, where he played doubles with Marc-Andrea Huesler. With Huesler, he won the championship, effectively becoming the youngest player to lift the Open title.

The previous record was held by Federer, who won the tournament when he was 19 with Marat Safin.
