Barcelona Considering Xavi to Replace Under-Pressure Ernesto Valverde

Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has been under pressure for a while now. Though last night’s defeat against rivals Atletico Madrid might just have put the final nail in the coffin for the Spanish tactician.

According to Catalan radio station RAC1, per AS, Barcelona hierarchy is set to meet with Xavi in Doha. Eric Abidal, Barcelona’s sporting director and Oscar Grau, the CEO, two of Barcelona President, Josep Maria Bartomeu’s trusted executives.

And the news does make sense as the Barcelona squad is in Saudi Arabia for their Spanish Super Cup fixture.

Xavi, Barcelona’s one of the most Legendary figures, has always been linked with a move to Camp Nou. The Spanish midfielder who also holds the record for the most number of appearances for the club is currently managing Qatar Stars League football club, Al Sadd.

Ernesto Valverde set to stay till the end of the season

Although, for now, it seems like any such deal has to wait till the summer. As the Barcelona decision-makers are still believed to have put their trust in Ernesto Valverde. Though RAC1 did report after their recent 3-2 loss to Diego Simeone’s men Valverde’s position has become “very delicate”.

Ernesto Valverde has been under immense pressure from Barcelona fans all over the world. As they reportedly believe that the former Athletic Bilbao has massively underachieved at Camp Nou.

And it may not be an overstatement. As Valverde, in spite of winning the league twice, have failed to make his mark in the prestigious Champions League.

Xavi to Barcelona manager next season?

With Xavi, it is widely believed that he would bring the club and the fans closer being one of the fan favourites during his playing days too. His stature would also help him command respect in a dressing room which is full of superstars itself.

Xavi has already stated that it is his objective to go to Barcelona and manage them. Though he also did mention that he doesn’t consider it to be his obsession.

Making a comment on the speculations, Al Sadd general manager Turki Al-Ali said, “Xavi going to Barcelona is normal and expected because he will be at his club, it’s his first home and he must return there in the future, but as of today, Xavi is the coach of Al Sadd.”
