CLT20 Semi-Final 2,CSK v/s KXIP:Batting Heavyweights Resume Rivalry

The two IPL giants will resume their rivalry on the big stage of the CLT20 at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Thursday. Punjab have had a formidable run in the group stage where they won all their matches while Chennai had to rely on other teams for their progress into the semi finals. Not only are the teams strong in their batting department, but they have immense depth also. Moreover, both the teams are comparatively weaker when it comes to bowling. We can surely expect a really high scoring game when they face each other later today. Top Players to watch out for:

1. Virender Sehwag:

In the eliminator of the last IPL, Viru’s century at the top of the order knocked the breath out of the Super Kings’ bowling. He is capable of providing great starts to his team and can be lethal if he finds his feet early in the innings. This has been an average tournament for him so far but fireworks from him can be expected today.

2.Glenn Maxwell:

Has found it difficult to get into his groove which may be because of the high expectations. But in the previous three games against the men in yellow, Maxi has clobbered them all around the park, scoring 198 runs in 3 matches at a strike rate of 172. He has been brutal against the Chennai Super Kings ace spin bowler Ravichandran Ashwin, hitting the ball with the turn and smothering it into the stands. Maxwell should live up to his expectations if he gives himself a bit of time on the crease. Nevertheless it will a mouth watering clash to see the battle between Maxi and Ashwin.

3.David Miller:

The left handed prodigy has matured as a cricketer over the years and is considered to be one of the best finishers in recent times. He has been in great form recently scoring 46*off 34, 40*off 18. Kings XI’s batting line-up has often been never-ending and Miller usually drills the final nail in the coffin by finishing it off in style. He has struggled a bit starting against spin but he has worked his way out by rotating the strike and punishing bad balls.

4.Akshar Patel:

This player cemented his place in the Punjab side with a string of good performances both with the bat and ball. Skipper Bailey has a lot of faith in him. His left arm spin is very useful in containing the batsmen as he darts them in. He has been quite handy with the bat down the order as well, chipping in with important contributions. His innings against Barbados helped Punjab snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

5.Suresh Raina

Arguably,the most consistent batsman in T20 cricket , has been in good touch recently and will play a crucial role in building the innings and accelerating towards the end. Has the ability to provide stability in the middle order and can also go berserk towards the end. The opposition would be looking to get rid of him as soon as possible.

 

6.Dwayne Bravo

The bowler from Trinidad is vastly experienced in T20 cricket and uses his subtle variations to fox the batsmen into playing wrong shots. He always has been MSD’s go to man during crisis situations. An excellent fielder and can be useful with the bat also.

7.Ravindra Jadeja

He is a much improved batsman than he was a few years ago. He along with Dhoni will have the responsibility of finishing it off in style. Man of the Match award in the previous game will surely boost his confidence coming into this crucial game. It would be interesting to see how he bowls to the Maxi-Miller duo , because most of the times they have managed to get the better of him.

• Super Kings and Kings XI have the two highest totals in the CLT20. They also have the top five totals in the IPL to their name.

• Akshar Patel is the most economical bowler from either side having an economy of 5.81 runs per over in four matches.

• Both the teams have decent record at the Rajiv Gandhi stadium. While KXIP have won four of their five matches at the venue, CSK have been victorious in two of their three outings.

• In all the three matches between KXIP and CSK in IPL 2014,the team batting first posted in excess of 200.The average runs scored from the three clashes between the two teams in IPL 2014 was 419 runs.
  

Our Prediction : 

Even though Punjab have a superior record against Chennai in the recent times, I would still go with CSK on this one, simply because I don’t see MSD losing four times in a row to the same opposition in T20 . They’ll surely have plans for Viru, Maxi and Miller. A revenge is on the cards for Dhoni and co. I still think that the team which tries to win will want to bat the opposition out of the game so that a successful chase is out of the equation.But in T20 cricket, anything can happen.
