On February 11, 31 years ago, the sport of boxing saw its biggest upset. The biggest star back then, Mike Tyson, got brutally TKOed by the underdog James Douglas. ‘Iron’ Mike lost his undefeated streak in this fight, coupled with his multiple heavyweight titles.

‘Buster’ became an overnight star after that win and became a household name in the sport. In a chat with On The Ropes, the veteran revealed his preparations for this bout.

“Well, I was excited about this opportunity and I knew I had my work cut out for me for sure, because he was destroying everybody that they put in there, and it had really been proven that he was the legitimate heavyweight champion because he had beaten some important guys along the way,” said Douglas.

Given Tyson’s record and his form, Douglas’ path to victory was easy. He had to avoid a knockout and give it his all as he was up against a man who was entering his thirty-eighth fight on the back of 37 wins.

Tyson was the superior star and an ultimate knockout artist of the game. This made Douglas’ work extremely hard on himself and mold himself to his best shape. He gave in the work of his life against the toughest opponent he confronted and stood as a winner that night.

Right from the first gong, he traced Tyson’s movements and ate a few big shots. In fact, he was the first one to go on the canvas in round 8 after succumbing to an upper-cut by the daunting heavyweight. But, ‘Buster’ displayed a champion attitude and kept his composure.

He struck ‘The Baddest Man On The Planet’ in round 10 with powerful combinations to hand him his maiden professional defeat.

After the Holyfield loss, he bagged enormous wins, and in 1998, he received a title shot against Lou Savarese and failed yet again.

Considering his lackluster reign in the sport, Douglas took up his last bout in 1999. He fared up to the mark in this fight against Andre Crowder and hung his gloves officially after a win.

‘Buster’ retired with a track record of 37 wins and 6 losses.

Despite a career filled with trials, Douglas made a strong highlight of his name. He will always be remembered for the incredible feat he pulled off on February 11, 1990.
