On February 27, Canelo Alvarez will take on the mandatory challenger, Avni Yildirim. The Turkish boxer will touch gloves with the toughest opponent of his boxing career in a super-middleweight bout. The boxing world is well aware of the veteran pugilist Alvarez, but how much do we actually know about his opponent Yildirim?

‘Mr.Robot’ has lived his entire life in Istanbul, Turkey. He began boxing in his early teenage days and enjoyed a classic amateur record of 120-12. He won a bronze medal at the Mediterranean Championships and even represented Turkey at the World Championships in 2013.

However, he ended up on the losing vertical there and opted to take up the sport professionally.

The 29-year-old made his debut in 2014. He fought Davit Ribakoni in a 4-rounder light-heavyweight contest and emerged victorious by 40-36 on the judges’ scorecards. Ever since then, there was no turning back for him. In fact, he won the WBC international silver light-heavyweight title after a year of his professional debut.

Yildirim suffered his first career loss in 2017, against Chris Eubank Jr. The pair fought for the IBO super-middleweight strap, and this was the Turkish boxer’s first momentous shot at the world title.

Although he succumbed to a distressing loss so early in his career, ‘Mr. Robot’ didn’t let his spirits sink. Instead, he kept himself relevant in the division with constant wins.

Yildirim competed last in 2019 against Anthony Dirrell and lost his second pro-boxing fight.
