Boxing sprang into life once again when Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Canelo Alvarez stepped up to fight each other for the WBA and WBC super welterweight titles in 2013.

It was one of the biggest events in the sport’s history and broke all-time PPV records. Fans tuned in to see the two unbeaten pugilist and prime prodigies collide.

That said, the fight had a lot more in store. Floyd Mayweather and Canelo Alvarez appeared invincible at the time, and boxing fans needed to know who’s the better pugilist.

However, Mayweather fought Alvarez way before he touched his prime and the outcome clearly showed that. Mayweather surpassed a young Canelo throughout and sealed the victory via decision.

Alvarez had his moments in the squared circle. But it wasn’t enough against one of the greatest of all time.

While boxing fans demanded a rematch somewhere down the line, it’s clearly not happening. Alvarez is now busy with his title defences while Mayweather is opting to YouTubers in exhibition bouts.

The American boxer schooled Alvarez and made him miss out on the best shots. Eventually, Canelo was worn out as the fight went deeper. Mayweather counter-attacked Alvarez with his vintage pull shots and right hooks. Even though Alvarez ate those shots without falling off, he couldn’t offer much in response.

Meanwhile, Mayweather appeared the better man till the last bell rang, and despite missing a stoppage, it was a lopsided win for him.

Sporting News further cites, Mayweather landed 46% of the total shots and Canelo only landed 22% in the entire fight.

After the fight, Alvarez developed grandly and outshone all his opponents. He has yet to lose a bout and boasts of a pro record of 53 wins, 1 loss, and 2 no results.

But the one loss against the best may still itch him. He will return to the ring against a looming Callum Smith next week. Smith will want to join Mayweather as the boxers to beat Alvarez. Like all comers, he is set to bring his A-game against the great Mexican.
