British professional boxer Amir Khan has given his opinion on boxing’s rising star ‘King’ Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia has held the WBC silver lightweight title since 2019 and is considered by many as the future face of boxing. However, this is an opinion Amir Khan doesn’t share.
Khan has labeled Garcia as somewhat of a ‘robotic’ fighter. From unnecessary call-outs towards Gervonta Davis to his unnatural punches, Khan feels there’s a lot going wrong for the young champion.
“His power, speed looked good. Being a little bit flashy is good because that’s what sells. With Ryan Garcia, I think with him, he’s trying hard to be something he’s not. said Khan
Khan’s criticism of Garcia might seem harsh, but he certainly has a point. Ryan has called out ‘The Tank’ Gervonta Davis on several occasions but with Davis arguably a better boxer than Garcia is, all these call-outs seem to be another media ploy.
Despite the criticism, Garcia has had an illustrious rise to the top. His ‘flash’ like punches and agility across the ring has made him a fan favorite.
“I think he needs to stick with his natural style. Don’t try to be something that you’re not. Look, knockouts are going to come. When you hit someone with a clean shot, they’re going to go down. If you’re going to rely on speed all the time, just be yourself. Box them. Try to put the shots together,” said Khan
Garcia’s ‘straight-up’ boxing style, coupled with his flashy fast punches might prove to be his downfall against bigger opposition. His style leaves him vulnerable to punches, moreover, his frame doesn’t help his cause either.
With champions like Devin Haney and Gervonta Davis patrolling the division, these weaknesses could very well be exposed.
With a plethora of fights ahead of him, We can only hope Garcia reaches his potential.
