Mike Tyson was the latest guest on Joe Rogan’s podcast. He came on the podcast ahead of his exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr., which will be his return to the sport after a 15-year-long break.
Mike Tyson is scheduled to return to the ring in a charity match. He will fight the former world heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. Tyson’s last professional bout came in 2005 against Kevin McBride, an Irish-born heavyweight.
Mike Tyson began training this April and got back in shape. He went full steam ahead with his training and suffered the consequences.
Joe Rogan asked Tyson, “How long into training was the first time you sparred?” While answering this question, Tyson also shared what went through his mind during his first sparring session.
“First time I sparred in 15 years… It was really weird and stuff, but I realized something when I was getting hit. I got hit a couple of times… But I didn’t go ‘WTF am I doing here.’ I said, ‘Wait, I belong here!’ I got rocked, and I heard the ringing in my ear, but I didn’t panic, I belong here!”
Mike added, “I never said what the f**k am I doing here. This sh** is… I was expecting that. That was what I was expecting really, but the first thing I said was ‘I belong here’… And the next time I sparred, I was comfortable.”
Mike Tyson also said how he had to alter his mindset when he got back. It’s not the same as it was 15 years ago. He said his body is different now, and he has consciously made the necessary changes to accommodate that difference.
