Ryan Garcia is about to enter the ring against Devin Haney on April 20 in Brooklyn, New York. Going into the fight, ‘The Dream’ Haney is the crowd favorite, given his superior skills and achievements in the sport. So, it’s safe to say that the Victorville native has a tough time ahead of him. However, Garcia’s trainer, Derrick James, seems to have figured out the perfect plan to stop Haney in his tracks.

Haney and Garcia are career rivals, having fought each other six times in the past. Even though their fights were in their amateur days, both fighters are aware of each other’s fighting styles pretty well. Even though both fighters have three wins against each other, James, in a recent interview with Cigar Talk, expressed his desire for Ryan Garcia to execute this special technique and secure the victory!

During the interview, the host probed James about how he plans to tackle Haney in the upcoming fight between Garcia and Haney. In response, the world-class trainer explained, “Every one of the new little young fighters, all kind of, fight the same. They fight very similar. They all use something that they saw somebody do, and they like it. So, they try to stick to that or whatever.”  Mistaking Gervonta Davis for Haney, he states, “I think the Tank has ability to be a boxer and a puncher and a banger at the same time.”

However, speaking about Haney, James claimed Haney is a completely different animal when it comes to knowledge about the sport. “Devin is a good boxer, man. He’s like he’s very educated with his jab, and he’s able to create all these aspects of boxing,” said James. So, in a nutshell, James plans to put Haney out of his comfort zone. “So, for me, I just had to not let him be himself. I mean cuz if you let someone be themselves, [they] have the time of their lives,” James explained his technique.

However, before the bout, James appeared in an interview with Fight Hub TV, where he revealed the crucial advice that led to a fabulous performance against Duarte and, of course, the eighth-round win. James emphasized that Garcia can’t linger on what had happened in the past and had to move forward.

“It’s in the past. You can’t live in it [because] you can’t move forward if you [are] stuck in that particular space. That’s real life, so don’t worry about it, keep it moving, and stay focused,” James claimed – was his advice to Garcia. It’s worth noting that after training with James, many have highlighted improvements in Garcia’s game during the Duarte fight.
