After years of anticipation, Irish boxing champion, Katie Taylor, finally had her homecoming fight when she squared off against Chantelle Cameron this past Saturday in Dublin, Ireland. The majority of Taylor’s career has been in the lightweight division. However, she wanted to up the stakes for the fight and decided to fight Cameron in the light-welterweight division. Although she fought and defeated her at the amateurs, the result in professionals was contrary as this time around, Cameron got the better of her.

Cameron is the current undisputed light-welterweight champion. It is safe to say that her fight with Cameron was premature as she fell short and got handed her first-ever defeat via a majority decision. Although it was a competitive bout, one had never seen Taylor look so vulnerable in a fight. After the fifth round, her corner gave advice that is making rounds on the internet.

What did Katie Taylor’s corner advise her mid-fight?

A video was posted by DAZN Boxing in which it revealed the “corner cam” of each round and the highlights of the bout. After the fifth round, Taylor’s corner vehemently advised her not to fight on the ropes but instead just punch and move around.

Her coach stated, “Get on the ropes, you are setting traps, you touch her, you hold her, you turn her back to the ropes. Get up. You don’t want to live there.” He explains by adding, “When you are on the ropes, she has a free pass to try to treat you like a heavy bag.”

While, he was explaining it to her, the lightweight champion appeared to be consciously listening to him. Although Taylor did lose the bout, the advice given by her coach was sound as she looked the most vunerable fighting on the ropes.

Katie Taylor’s corner advised her to fight on the inside

After the sixth round, Taylor was the more accurate fighter. Her accuracy by that round was 49% to Cameron’s 30%. Her corner took notice of the same and stated, “You’re going to sit inside with her, listen you got to use your attributes. You got better hand speed, you got better foot speed. So when you’re in close you got to overwhelm her with the hand speed.”
