In an unexpected twist to the boxing world’s most highly anticipated event, the showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk set for February 17 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, has been called off. The postponement comes after Tyson Fury, the WBC heavyweight champion, sustained a serious cut during a sparring session, rendering him unable to compete on the scheduled date.

The bout was poised to crown the undisputed world heavyweight champion after more than two decades, making the postponement a significant disappointment for fans and stakeholders alike. With Fury’s injury now forcing a delay, Team Usyk is reportedly exploring a potential fight with Filip Hrgovic, the current IBF mandatory challenger, to stay active in the interim. So does that mean that a fight between the two is off the table completely?

Another setback caused by another injury

Boxing reporter Michael Benson, while sharing an image of Tyson Fury with a cut above his eyes, wrote, “Tyson Fury’s cut suffered in sparring today that has caused the Oleksandr Usyk fight to be postponed.” According to a spokesperson for Fury, the cut above the eye was severe and required stitches, necessitating some time for healing. This marks another setback for the Fury-Usyk match-up, initially slated for December before being moved to February 2024.

The original plans for a December bout between the two were derailed by an eye injury that the ‘Gypsy King’ sustained during his controversial match against Francis Ngannou on October 28, 2023, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The February date was confirmed only after Fury recuperated from his bout with Ngannou. However, the optimistic prospect of the highly awaited showdown between Fury and Usyk now appears uncertain, given the setback caused by the injury and the time it will take for the injury to heal.

The fight’s organizers and promoters, including Queensberry Promotions, have, for their part, expressed their intention to reschedule the historic clash as soon as possible, pending a medical evaluation of Fury’s condition. Fury himself has released a statement about the incident. So what did he say?

Devastated Fury apologizes!

In the wake of the postponement of his blockbuster fight with Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury expressed his deep disappointment and commitment to making amends. “I am absolutely devastated after preparing for this fight for so long and being in such superb condition,” Fury stated, underscoring the emotional toll of the setback.

He extended his apologies to all parties involved, from both teams to the fans and partners, especially highlighting his bond with Saudi Arabia. “I feel bad for everyone involved in this huge event,” Fury added, promising to “work diligently towards the rescheduled date once the eye has healed.” His words reflect a fighter’s resilience and a pledge to return stronger for the eagerly awaited showdown.
