Ever since their fight back in 2013, Canelo Alvarez and Floyd Mayweather have been the biggest rivals. Even though ‘Cinnamon’ lost the fight, they have continued competing against each other in other aspects of life. In a recent interview, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions speculated that Canelo aims to use a victory against Jermell Charlo to prove his superiority over Floyd.

Without a doubt, Floyd Mayweather is one of the best boxers to ever step inside the square ring. But Canelo has not strayed far behind! While Floyd retired from boxing without ever-tasting defeat, Canelo became the undisputed super middleweight champion, clinching every major belt in the division. Canelo has even fought a greater number of bouts than Floyd, giving him the edge in experience. Nevertheless, Leonard Ellerbe seems convinced Canelo is gunning for one of Floyd’s records to avenge his first career loss. Which record is Ellerbe talking about?

While speaking to Fight Hype, Ellerbe revealed Canelo harbors ambitions far beyond his current accomplishments. He claimed Canelo aims to defeat more world champions than Floyd has. “Floyd has defeated 23 world champions, current and former. Canelo’s at 18,” Ellerbe told Fight Hype.

He further added, “ That’s something that. It’s not impossible that he can attain.”

Later in the interview, Ellerbe claimed, “If he’s successful Saturday night [fight against Charlo], and that’s if he is successful, he would be at 19.” Ellerbe also mentioned that Canelo would want to go down in history as a fighter who defeated the most world champions. Canelo has already achieved so much, but only time will tell if he can break Floyd’s record of beating 23 world champions.

Shawn Porter on Canelo vs. Jermell Charlo

The much-anticipated bout between Canelo and Charlo will unfold this weekend in T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. In the lead-up to the fight, Charlo is a massive underdog because he is climbing two weight divisions for the matchup. But that’s not the reason Shawn Porter thinks Canelo will win the fight.

According to Porter, boxing is a business, and he would prefer to bet on the business. Porter even claimed the only way Charlo has a shot at winning is if he knocks out Canelo.
