Unsurprisingly, Shakur Stevenson secured his spot in the exclusive three-division club, clinching the WBC lightweight championship with a unanimous decision victory over Edwin De Los Santos. However, the celebration was shortlived because of a disappointing performance after high anticipation associated with Stevenson’s second match in the lightweight division. However, fans were left voicing their disappointment over the lack of action in the ring.

Stevenson, also disappointed by his performance, was vocal about his discontent. However, Claressa Shields, the female champion bruiser, took to her social media to voice out her pride in the new 3-division champion and congratulated him for making history.

Claressa Shields is proud of ‘Sugar’

On Saturday night at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Stevenson added the WBC lightweight title to his collection, previously securing the WBO featherweight title in 2019 and holding the WBO super featherweight title from 2021 to 2022, and the WBC and The Ring super featherweight titles in 2022.

Amidst the mixed reactions to Shakur Stevenson’s triumph in securing the WBC lightweight championship, fellow boxer Claressa Shields took to social media to congratulate him on joining the prestigious three-division world champion club.

In a tweet that encapsulated support and encouragement, Shields welcomed Stevenson to the three-division club, emphasizing the significance of the achievement. Retweeting a post by Top Rank Boxing, Shields wrote, “Welcome to the 3 division club Shakur Stevenson! Keep looking forward! I’m proud of you.” It showcased the camaraderie among athletes and the acknowledgment of the challenges and dedication required to reach such heights in the sport.

Despite the victory, Stevenson’s lackluster display had the 6,703-strong crowd expressing their displeasure. The bout against De Los Santos, who dropped to a 16-2 record, saw Stevenson often moving backward, with his opponent unable to capitalize on opportunities to land significant blows.

Stevenson is not happy

Shields’ congratulatory message comes against the backdrop of Stevenson’s admission that the performance in the ring fell below his own standards. The disappointment was not only evident in the audience but also in Stevenson’s own assessment of the fight. However, Shields’ positive recognition serves as a reminder of the importance of celebrating victories, regardless of the challenges faced along the way. The fighter was also heavily booed by the crowds in the T Mobile arena who were not happy with the judges’ decision.

Addressing reporters after the fight, he acknowledged the subpar performance, saying, “Don’t congratulate me on a bad performance. It just wasn’t me, man. I had a lot going on. I ain’t gonna make no excuses. It was a good fight, just a bad performance and not my standards.”

On the other hand, emphasizing that Stevenson merely survived the encounter, De Los Santos contended that he was the people’s champion. Despite the judges awarding Stevenson the title, the sentiment from the defeated fighter suggests a belief in his own performance and a challenge to the decision.

In the unpredictable world of sports, where wins and losses are often accompanied by scrutiny, the acknowledgment from a fellow champion can serve as a source of motivation for Stevenson as he looks ahead to future challenges in his boxing career.
