Boxing, known for its fierce nature and intense physicality, is a sport that has earned a reputation for causing significant damage, even to adult competitors. The sight of two skilled fighters engaged in a battle of strength and strategy is awe-inspiring for many spectators. However,  boxing is a sport that poses inherent risks, even for adults, raising concerns about the potential impact on children’s developing bodies and minds.

The decision to allow children to participate in boxing is not without controversy. Advocates argue that the sport instills discipline, confidence, and self-defense skills, but opponents highlight the potential long-term physical and emotional consequences for young fighters. This was exactly what happened when an announcement of an upcoming bout between two 9-year-olds took over the internet by storm.

Children’s boxing debut sparks debate over youth involvement in the ring

A promotion by the name of Chill Boxing recently took to social media to announce their next fight. The bout will take place between two 9-year-olds, Mason “The Viper” Maynard from Ashland, KY, and Landon “Pitbull” Vandyke from Richlands, VA. Both youngsters are making their boxing debut, and the match will take place at a 68-lb maximum weight category.

However, the event, known as the Boone County Brawl, generated some controversy. Moreover, fans flooded with reactions expressing concerns over the ethical implications of putting children in the ring for such a physically demanding sport.

A user named Kaylyn Godessey compared this to the promoter trying to sell her a dog fight. She also revealed that she could not unsee this poster after taking a glimpse of it. “They look like they’re trying to sell their pitbull out as a stud. It’s the same exact graphics. I can’t unsee this. Where is the fake barbed wire lol,” she wrote.

Another user Kevyn Colter did not like the idea of two kids fighting in the ring. “This makes my stomach chur,.” she wrote.

Moreover, a user named Siani Rodriguez pointed out the potential dangers of children fighting in the ring. “This isn’t cool regardless of how many boxers started young. We now know the effects these blows can have on grown men imagine a child,” she wrote.

A user even went as far as claiming that this kind of fighting was ‘child abuse’. “I should be laughing at the absurdity of this, but this is straight up child abuse,” she wrote.

However, a user argued that many great boxers started out young and went on to have great careers. “hundreds and hundreds of the famous boxers started that young just like any other sport,” he wrote.

Boxing is undoubtedly a sport that requires immense dedication and bravery but allowing children to compete at such a young age raises serious concerns.
