In the world of heavyweight boxing, Dillian Whyte has been a consistent figure, often regarded as one of the division’s elite boxers. Despite facing top-tier competition, the London-based fighter has yet to claim any of the four major titles. Instead, he has endured both victories and setbacks, cementing his status as a formidable contender.

As he prepares for an eagerly anticipated rematch with Anthony Joshua on August 12 at the O2 Arena in London, Whyte has voiced his frustrations over the perceived lack of respect from the boxing establishment. The two first fought back in 2015 when Whyte faced a seventh-round knockout defeat. While Joshua went on to achieve championship success, Whyte continued to battle at the highest level, even challenging Tyson Fury for the WBC championship in 2022.

Now, ‘The Body Snatcher’ looks to move up into title contention with Joshua being a perfect opponent for him to reclaim his status. Despite this, Whyte was not too keen on the lack of respect he received through the years.

Dillian Whyte opens up on his struggle for recognition and respect in boxing

In a recent interview with BBC 5 Live Boxing, Whyte gave an honest take on his status in the sport. He expressed his frustration and disappointment with the lack of recognition, despite being a top contender. One of the key issues that seem to bother Whyte is the missed opportunities to face certain high-profile opponents. Moreover, these missed chances may have contributed to his perception of being treated unfairly.

“I’m used to ups and downs in my life. Obviously, it’s a shame being one of the top fighters in the world, I’m still struggling like I was. It’s the same. It’s been tough. I haven’t been treated the way I should’ve been treated and getting the right respect,” he said

Whyte has openly expressed his disappointment over not getting the opportunity to face Deontay Wilder when he was the WBC champion. More recently, he expressed discontent with the promotion leading up to his fight against WBC titlist Tyson Fury. However, Whyte feels that even a win over Joshua will not change the public perception of him.

Whyte anticipates an uphill battle, even with a victory against Joshua

Later in the interview, ‘The Body Snatcher’ doubled down on this topic. He claimed that even if he achieves victory against Joshua, he will still face criticism and skepticism from some quarters. Whyte feels that regardless of the outcome, there will be people who undermine his achievement and try to diminish his success with unfounded allegations and excuses.

“Even if I beat AJ, I’m still not going to get the respect I deserve. If I beat him, they’re gonna say, ‘Oh, he was diminished. He was losing his mind. He was this, he was that.’ There’s going to be some nonsense being said.” Whyte added.

Despite the potential for detractors to question his victory, he remains steadfast in his pursuit of excellence. Ultimately, he carries with him the hope that his performance will silence the doubters and cement his place among boxing’s elite.
