David Benavidez is all set to take on the two-division world champion Demetrius Andrade on 25 November at Michelob Ultra Arena, Las Vegas. However, his real target is someone else entirely! Previously, David Benavidez was green-lit to be the mandatory challenger for Canelo Alvarez. Their much-anticipated clash is supposed to happen sometime in 2024, as far as WBC is concerned. Yet, ‘The Mexican Monster’ Benavidez has some reservations about the fight happening.

The 27-0 WBC Interim World Supper middleweight champion has been adamant about deserving a shot at Canelo Alvarez. However, he has to take down the undefeated Andrade for all but cementing the Canelo fight next year. Yet, the Phoenix native acknowledged the possibility of the fight failing to happen if Canelo does not agree. During a recent interview with Stephen A. Smith, Benavidez laid down his plans in case Canelo doesn’t agree to face him after winning against Andrade.

During his appearance in the interview with Stephen A. Smith, Benavidez confidently asserted that he wanted to become the best in the division. So, if Canelo doesn’t wish to fight him, he will fight someone else. “My plan is, like I said, to be the best – best in the world at this division. If he doesn’t want to fight me, I’ll fight whoever,” said Benavidez.

He went on to reveal a potential opponent in case Canelo doesn’t agree to face him. “I’m also interested to go up to 175 and fight Bivol. I think that’s a fight that could be made,” said Benavidez. However, Benavidez claimed that he and his team are pressuring WBC to make the Canelo fight happen. In addition, he suggested the winner of his upcoming fight will be the mandatory challenger for Canelo.

Demetrius Andrade on Canelo Alvarez

The winner of the upcoming clash between Andrade and Benavidez will possibly face Canelo next year as the mandatory challenger. However, that hasn’t stopped the two boxers from criticizing the Mexican superstar. While appearing in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Andrade revealed his thoughts on Canelo Alvarez. Andrade began by suggesting Canelo wanted to fight Jermell Charlo and Terence Crawford instead of him or Benavidez.

“We don’t know what he’s doing. He’s trying to fight Charlo and Terence Crawford. And then what, Tank Davis,” said Andrade. He went on to suggest that Canelo had plenty of chances to fight him or Benavidez but was afraid of fighting them. “He had plenty opportunity to fight me, and he had opportunity to fight David already, so…I don’t think he really wants that challenge,” said Andrade.
