Boxing News: Jose Benavidez Sr. Reveals Plans for David Benavidez’s Return in 2024

David Benavidez finished 2023 on a strong note by defeating Demetrius Andrade via a sixth-round knockout. It was his second fight after conquering Caleb Plant earlier that year via a unanimous decision. However, what does 2024 hold for ‘The Mexican Monster?’ Jose Benavidez Sr., David’s father, has the answer!

On one hand, fans and pundits alike have been dreaming about a fight with Canelo Alvarez. On the other, the dream fight doesn’t show any signs of coming to life. While appearing in an interview with Fight Hub TV today, David’s father outlined the plans for him in 2024. 

David Benavidez has a lot of offers

Talking about the prospect of fighting this year, Benavidez Sr. said, “We’re thinking [of] fighting maybe – June [or] July, somewhere around there, possibly May and the end of May or something like that.” He suggested the cards for those dates are actively being put together by moving things around according to requirements. 

Benavidez Sr. added, “I’ve been contacted about a couple of fighters, so we’re still looking. And David will fight anybody, to be honest.” However, the only point of concern is that there is no confirmation from all the other fighters on the card. Later in the interview, Benavidez Sr. claimed they are not picking or choosing David’s opponents – David is open to fighting whoever is willing to get in the ring with him. Meanwhile, he also had a lot to say about the pending Canelo vs. David fight.

Jose Benavidez Sr. goes in on Canelo Álvarez

As per the WBC, Benavidez is Canelo’s mandatory, and if he doesn’t fight ‘The Mexican Monster,’ Canelo can be stripped of his belt in March. However, there is no word on that regard, something Benavidez Sr. emphasized. While discussing Canelo going for a fight with Jermall Charlo, instead of facing his son who is a mandatory, Benavidez Sr. claimed, “I don’t think it will happen. Canelo doesn’t want anything to do with David [Benavidez]. He comes with the excuses all the time.”

Benavidez Sr. highlighted Canelo’s comments about David being a below-par fighter with no experience against good opponents, stating, “He and his team will do anything to stay away from David.” He added, “I am just praying that the commission [WBC] will be fair to everybody. David is the mandatory [with the WBC].”
