Oscar De La Hoya stirs the boxing pot yet again. However this time, he’s taken to X, formerly Twitter to make some heavy speculations. He has invoked memories of the contentious Castillo/Mayweather bout from 2002. Floyd Mayweather Jr. won that bout via controversial unanimous decision, which did not sit well with fans. However, Mayweather went up against Jose Luis Castillo twice and emerged the victor both times.

Oscar De La Hoya has been hinting at several matchups lately. With an almost childlike fervor, he made an all-boxing fantasy matchup called “The Boxing Superbowl” dropping names of bruisers such as Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez. As  De La Hoya hints at an impending clash between rising stars Shakur Stevenson and William Zepeda, the boxing world eagerly awaits confirmation, while De La Hoya teases yet another potential showdown.

Oscar De La Hoya sparks speculation with provocative tweet

In a Twitter post, De La Hoya highlighted Stevenson’s alleged reluctance to face Zepeda again. This contrasts with the Mexican boxer’s eagerness to step into the ring with the young pugilist. Furthermore, Oscar De La Hoya went as far as to say that nobody wants “no part of Shakur.”

The reference to Castillo/Mayweather, and the controversial unanimous decision ruling in Mayweather’s favor adds a layer of anticipation, drawing parallels to a historic clash that divided opinions.

Zepeda’s pressure style might pose a potential challenge for Shakur Stevenson, raising concerns that Shakur could employ an unpopular Mayweather-esque pullback strategy. The anticipation of such an approach makes the proposed Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda bout less appealing to fans and pundits in the community.

Last year, however, Zepeda did “duck” Stevenson. A lot can change in a year. Furthermore, it is quite obvious that De La Hoya is chomping at the bit to make this match-up happen. Moreover, in typical of his ‘Golden Boy’ fashion, he has been throwing wild matchups in the air lately.

The Boxing Superbowl

After calling the highly anticipated bout between Canelo Alvarez and Jermell Charlo boring, ‘Golden Boy’ initially expressed his astonishment at the recently inaugurated Vegas Sphere, describing it as incredibly impressive. Oscar then envisioned an extraordinary boxing event, akin to a Super Bowl, and suggested potential headliners for the occasion, including Ryan Garcia, Teofimo Lopez, and Devin Haney.

De La Hoya’s tweet ignites the flames of anticipation. Thus setting the stage for a clash that could resonate through the annals of boxing history.
