The Celtics grabbed control early in a best-of-seven series by winning the opening two games on their home court. Although the Lakers persevered and won Game 3, the Celtics were unrelenting. They secured a commanding 3-1 lead. This led an ex-Laker member to lose his cool. However, the victims of his rage were not the Celtics or Lakers, it was Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg. They were told to “Shut the F**k up” as recounted by Matt Damon in an interview.

In the midst of a swarm of Lakers fans at Game 4 of the Finals, Damon was proudly sporting a Celtics jersey alongside Mark Wahlberg, another Boston native. With a startling 24-point lead in the third quarter, it appeared as though the Lakers had taken a commanding lead as the game went on. Although, Paul Pierce, a.k.a. ‘The Truth,’ of the Celtics, had other plans.

As the quarter came to a close, Pierce rallied his team and started an incredible 21-3 run. The renowned Phil Jackson, head coach of the Lakers, noticed the dramatic uptick in momentum and decided to call a timeout. Damon and Wahlberg were so ecstatic with Jackson’s choice that they were unable to contain their joy and burst into loud cheers.
Damon had no idea that Jackson had noticed him because of his ebullient demeanor. Jackson, who was well-known for his calm attitude and Zen-like coaching style, did not easily become distracted. Nevertheless, Damon’s jubilant outburst in the middle of Laker’s territory managed to get through even the most impenetrable coaching minds. An angered coach awaited the actor-duo.
Damon said,?“And Walhlhberg and I are ‘Oh my god …’ and as he calls the timeout and he just spins on us and he goes, ‘Sit down and shut the fu** up.’ He was so mad, which I get. Look, I can’t imagine if I’m having a bad day at work and there are f*****g people cheering for my pain, right?”
He continued,
“But like we’re like, ‘How’s the Zen stuff working out?'” Matt Damon then burst into laughter, “It was great.”ADVERTISEMENT
