Alonzo Mourning’s non-profit builds Tucker Tower, which will help solve the housing problem by providing cheap homes for seniors in Miami-Dade.
Alonzo Mourning, a legendary player for the Miami Heat, took a big step to help solve the problem of homelessness in South Florida. The Hall of Fame center considers his residence to be his soul. The center spent most of his time with the Miami Heat and is now a vice president for his old team. He stayed in South Florida since he stopped playing basketball.
In collaboration with Miami-Dade County and the Housing Trust Group, Mourning’s non-profit, AM Affordable Housing, has opened Tucker Tower, a brand-new community of 120 affordable apartments for seniors aged 62 and up in West Perrine. The apartments’ rents range from $463 to just over $1,300 a month.

Alonzo Mourning is working to meet important needs via Tucker Tower
The idea for Tucker Tower came from a harsh fact: Miami-Dade County needs 90,000 more cheap houses. So, the project intends to improve community life as well as provide housing for people.
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava talked about how bad things are for many residents. She said that rents have risen by 50% or more, putting some people on the verge of being homeless.
People who live in Tucker Tower, like 66-year-old Georgina Milhet, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and had a hard time finding cheap housing, now feel safe and at ease inside its walls.

It is more than an apartment complex. Tucker Tower is a haven with a pool, stove, washer, as well as dryer, among other things. All of it makes its residents much less stressed and lets them prioritize their well-being and their joy.
The building of Tucker Tower shows how powerful it can be for non-profits, municipalities, and private businesses to work together. Miami-Dade County is taking strong steps to help solve the problem of expensive housing.
There are sixty-five county-related projects currently underway, and more than 8,400 units will soon be added. This shows other groups dealing with similar problems and how important it is to work together and help each other find long-lasting answers.
