The view of the NBA has changed quite a bit in recent times. With ticket prices soaring up but most performances going down, it is the fans who feel cheated. In the same light, Charles Barkley, who is well known for his honest remarks, staged the situation, warning the NBA Commissioner Adam Silver. The 11x All-Star explained why and how fans can make or break a basketball player on any team. Further, he also shared his views on how every successful player should give back to his community.

On the recently aired The Stephen A. Smith Show, the First Take commentator asked Barkley about his views on the NBA players today as compared to before. Sir Charles responded to him with a quick, “I think everybody has to be concerned.” He continued, “One thing you can’t do is alienate your fans. Because the fans make everything go. They buy our products, they watch our sport, and once you piss them off, there’s gonna be some repercussions.”

Apparently, the Hall of Famer was bringing up the NBA policy for load management. Chuck was giving a heads-up to Adam Silver for displeasing fans by not solving their concerns. He then added, “If you’re gonna make $50-60 million a year and still say I’m gonna play 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4 games. At some point, the fans are going to say ‘You’re charging me this much for tickets? Why should I care if they don’t care?'”

He further explained how the new deals are bringing more money to the players. “With this new TV deal guys are making more money. God forbid $100 million a year to play basketball. But the guy says I’m gonna rest tonight. At some point, fans are gonna say ‘I’ve had enough'”

While there have been some supporters of these new policies, Charles Barkley is making some good points against them.

What are the recent NBA policies?

The NBA, out of the concern for taxing the player’s body too much, introduced some new policies. First, the back-to-back-to-back games were removed from the schedule completely. Now, they have even reduced back-to-back matchups for any team. These amends are to ensure that the players get a complete recovery before their next game.

However, these policies hinder the entertainment fans gain from following a team. Consequently, it also affects their interest and hence the amount they wish to pay to the NBA. Interestingly, the average number of games played by an All-Star in the 2002-03 season was 79.2. In 2022-23, that number dropped significantly to 64.4. So, Charles Barkley surely makes a valid reasoning on why one thing a player should not do is abandon their fans. Do you agree with Charles Barkley?
