Magic Johnson marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day with an emotional pledge. Johnson took to X to express his gratitude toward MLK and said that he stands on the foundation that was laid down by the revered Civil Rights icon.
Johnson wrote, “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the dedication, vision, and sacrifice of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I honor him for being a voice for equity and what is right.”
The NBA veteran said that he tries to uphold the legacy of MLK through the work that he does and will always remain true to the dream. He wrote, “Dr. King is an inspiration! I am dedicated to continuing his legacy through my work in underserved communities.” He also said that whatever he has been able to accomplish as a businessman was all based on the dream that MLK spoke of so profoundly.

He continued, “I pursued business and established my own organization with his dream and vision in mind. I’m grateful to be in a position where I can provide numerous job opportunities to Black Americans and champion minority and women executives with opportunities in leadership roles.” Dr. King’s principles hold a lot of value in Johnson’s life and every year he reminds people of the path that MLK chose for the betterment of society.

In 2022, Magic reminded people that the dream that Dr. King talked about is still relevant and that people should be in relentless pursuit till that dream becomes a reality for every person who is part of society. He posted, “We must not let his work go in vain. People of color are deserving of respect and dignity. As we continue to make strides towards justice for all, we carry his legacy on our shoulders. The job is not done.”

Johnson practices what he preaches. The NBA legend is the recipient of the National Civil Rights Museum’s annual Freedom Awards. The honor was bestowed upon him back in 2007 for the incredible work he has done and for being a true leader in the modern-day civil rights movement. Even with him being honored back in 2007, he has continued to lead the movement with the same dedication for years and now has vowed to do it till the very end. Through his various organizations and businesses, Johnson has always risen to his responsibilities as a leader and has provided people of color with life-changing opportunities.
