It’s been nearly five years since Kanye West gave retired NBA veteran Matt Barnes a shoutout. Though many believe it must be a proud achievement for Barnes, he has time and again taken the trouble to clarify the truth of the lyrics. Yet again, the 43-year-old clarified that a part of the lyrics is not true, which is still a surprise for many NBA fans. Kanye West took notes from Barnes’ infamous altercation with Derek Fisher.

However, the exaggeration was a bit too much for it to be true.

Kanye West’s shoutout for Matt Barnes is not true

A 2016 song named ’30 Hours’ by West has a famous lyric, “Now a n**** mad, Now I’m about to drive 90 miles like Matt Barnes to kill…30 hours just to kill.”

According to reports, Barnes had a feud with his former teammate and then-New York Knicks coach Derek Fisher, where the former took a drive to square up with the latter. The fight was true, but Barnes did not drive for 30 hours or 90 miles.

The 43-year-old clarified, “So that was the urban legend because Kanye rapped about it. I really only drove 15 minutes. Quick trip…I was back in the house firing one up like in 45 minutes.”

Moreover, this is the third time that Barnes has clarified this. Once in his Instagram and once in a YouTube interview. After West’s ’30 hours’ went viral, the internet started to term Barnes as the “hardest light skin n****”. In response, the former Grizzlies star shared on his social media, “This internet is crazy!! I definitely needed this laugh though… I’ll wear this crown proudly.”

Yet again, Barnes made it clear, “I really only drove 15mins but 95miles sounds a lot better thx Kanye”. Though it was not a 90-mile drive, Barnes had a fight with Fisher, which cost him a massive $35,000 due to the NBA’s fine rule. The former Los Angeles Lakers teammates allegedly got into an altercation because of Fisher’s relationship with his then-wife, Gloria Govan.
