On June 27, John Cena completed 21 years in the WWE. The pro wrestling icon is part of the Ohio Valley Wrestling quartet that also includes legends Batista, Brock Lesnar, and Randy Orton. Among the four, Lesnar made his main roster debut first, in March 2002. Randy Orton followed the Beast Incarnate whose first appearance took place a month later. Batista’s debut was on May 9.
While all of them contributed heavily in elevating WWE to greater heights, Cena ranks a bit higher than his other hallowed peers due to his run as the face of the company and securing his stature as a generational star. He wouldn’t have been if it wasn’t for Vince McMahon. Recently, fans softened their stance towards Vinnie Mac for his decision to put Cena over others. But why did Cena get the preference?

John Cena served the WWE well as a face
Even with a debut in early 2002, Cena has to wait for a few years before getting his push from the company. The time was also right for him, as WWE poster boys Dwayne Johnson had moved to Hollywood and Stone Cold Steve Austin decided to call time on his career due to a life-threatening injury.

To make matters complicated for Vince McMahon, Brock Lesnar left the company in 2004 to pursue a career in the NFL. In the absence of credible faces, it left the pro wrestling impresario with a few choices, including Cena, Orton, and Batista. The Animal, Batista, was injury prone and was already in his 30s when he debuted. So, age and frequent breakdowns ruled him out. Randy Orton is perhaps one of the greatest heels to have ever graced the squared circle. It would have been difficult for him to carry out the job.
Cena had the Hulk Hogan-esque feature. He was a baby face with a strong American sentiment. This helped him carry his kayfabe around as well. The 46-year-old had a clean image and was great with the mic. Together, it convinced McMahon to put Cena over the others and his division has paid off massive dividends.
Of late, the 77-year-old billionaire has been on fans’ radar for controversial booking choices and random changes, which have affected the overall viewing experience. But fans have agreed that McMahon did his job perfectly with Cena.
Fans agree 100% with Vince McMahon on John Cena’s selection
Even though John Cena wasn’t as popular when he started wrestling, he swayed the crowd in his favor over the years. Now, the WWE Universe waits for Cena’s appearances, which have lessened due to his soaring acting career. Apart from wrestling and acting, he’s also involved in social work.
John Cena has granted over 650 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. All this makes him an endearing personality and for that, the fans approved McMahon’s choice of going with the 46-year-old as the face.
This user asked if Vince McMahon made the right choice, triggering a host of reactions from social media users.
Hall of Famer Arn Anderson says that Vince McMahon had to decide between John Cena, Randy Orton & Batista to become the next face of the company.

“How could you argue” says this fan as they put Cena above the rest.
I don’t know how you could argue for Orton or Batista over Cena. Cena carried the flag better than anyone, ever. Squeaky clean resume on and off screen. Insanely over with kids. Consistent. Never thrown off on the mic. Shifted career with WWE change in direction.

This user is in total agreement with McMahon’s choice.
Definitely 100%

Well, not entirely sure if this is valid, but yes, Vince McMahon did score a point with The Cenation Leader.
Vince handpicked has never failed

As mentioned above, Cena’s gimmick was one of his strengths.
Easily the right choice. John could do things out of kayfabe that fit his kayfabe character (all the Make A Wish stuff, etc). Randy couldn’t have granted over 600 wishes because of his character😅 No real Batista opinion on Batista in this regard

Another user also validated the pick.
Damn straight Vince made the right call. Love him or hate him, Cena was a generational talent who ticked off all the boxes as a quintessential WWE champion. He was a workhorse. He studied the playbook, and even rewrote it in some ways. He was pure determination and grit.
