Seth Rollins’ “God” Persona Germinated as a Result of a Very Personal Relationship: “Bit of a Reputation”

Seth Rollins, the renowned World Heavyweight Champion, had a few different names before his WWE fame. He initially claimed the championship at WWE Night of Champions, defending it against AJ Styles. 

Recently, Rollins pulled the curtains on one of his many personas. He delved into his past, revealing his ‘God’ persona’s origin. His candid disclosure about the creation of the ‘God’ persona during an interview shed light on the deeply personal inspiration of this wrestling identity.

The evolution of Seth Rollins with pre-WWE names and character inspirations

Seth Rollins became the inaugural World Heavyweight Champion at WWE Night of Champions in May this year. So far, he has successfully defended his title against Finn Balor and Shinsuke Nakamura at SummerSlam and Fastlane 2023, respectively. Before his WWE journey, Rollins went by the name Tyler Black, but that’s not the only moniker he adopted. In the early stages of his wrestling career, he even wrestled under the name ‘God.’ He shared the story behind this choice during an appearance on Mythical Kitchen. 

He said, “I developed a bit of a reputation for having an ego, a little bit. Being a bit full of myself. My brother is three years older than me and he is the complete opposite of me in that regard. He was a very humble, very quiet, well-mannered, selfless human being. Still to this day, I was not that. I was the opposite of that. I was loud, I was boisterous, I was arrogant.”

He explained that his ‘God’ persona was born from his self-confidence and ego. Rollins exhibited these traits from a young age, unlike his humble and selfless older brother.

He added, “By the time I was 14, I couldn’t be stopped. I was a monster. And as I was developing a character based on these personality traits, I thought ‘Well what better moniker for someone who thinks that they’re the best at everything?’ You can’t go any higher so God was the name.”

While he never used ‘God’ as his ring name in WWE, his 2019-2020 character, ‘The Messiah,’ incorporated religious themes. Rollins gathered followers like Austin Theory, Buddy Murphy, and AOP as his ‘disciples.’ Furthermore, he also briefly adopted the name Gixx, inspired by his brother’s love for the card game ‘Magic the Gathering.’

Rollins vs. McIntyre announced for WWE Crown Jewel after Raw showdown

At Crown Jewel, Seth Rollins faces a familiar rival for his WWE World Heavyweight Championship. After an intense confrontation on Monday Night Raw, WWE announced that Rollins will defend his title against Drew McIntyre in November. The Raw episode took place on 9th October. 

Rollins, despite a recent back injury, remains committed to being the champion fans love. During their exchange, McIntyre proposed the match be set for Crown Jewel to ensure Rollins’ full recovery, a challenge Rollins accepted.

 

However, following Rollins’ acceptance, Damian Priest attacked him from behind, with McIntyre watching. When Dominik Mysterio attempted to intervene with Priest’s Money in the Bank briefcase, McIntyre stopped him, preventing a cash-in.
