Moving ahead, let’s take a deeper look at the backstory of ‘The Rock’s’ inception.
From where did the moniker ‘The Rock’ stem from? Explained
After entering WWE in 1996, Dwayne Johnson got the name Rocky Maivia, resembling his father’s and grandfather’s names. Johnson’s initial run didn’t go down in the pages of history as a fan favorite with crowds largely booing him with “Rocky sucks” chant. But the situation took a shift with the WWE legend gradually taking over the pro wrestling world.
To initiate such a transitional phase, Johnson made a huge comeback following an injury in 1997. A heel turn as part of the Nature of the Domination turned into a blessing to his career. The WWE icon refused to go by Rocky Maivia and started referring to himself in the third person. Hence, he started adopting a new name, “The Rock.”
