Chile edged past infuriated Uruguay in the Copa America quarter-final thanks to a goal from Mauricio Isla in the 82nd minute. The Uruguayans exited the competition in rage after they were reduced to nine men against Chile.

The Uruguayans received six yellow cards and two red cards in the entire ninety minutes. The first incident took place in the 62nd minute when Edinson Cavani, the PSG Striker, was shown a second yellow card when he tapped Jara’s face slightly who subsequently fell to ground, hence seizing the opportunity which then led to the booking. But after the match was over, there was video evidence to prove that Jara Reyes was actually the culprit and had poked Cavani from the back. Cavani was seen arguing with the referee for a while but the decision could not be overruled and Cavani made his way to the dressing room.

The second sending off took place two minutes before the final whistle when defender Jorge Fucile apparently committed a foul on Alexis Sanchez while clearing the ball away. He was shown a second yellow card by the referee who was then surrounded by the Uruguayans shortly after. This caused the match to be halted for a few minutes before everything was settled.

All in all, the Chileans dominated the game with a massive 80% possession and with 8 shots on target. Mauricio Isla scored the goal from just inside the box after Fernando Muslera had punched out a cross. Chile has never won the Copa America and will look to overturn that when they face the winner of today’s quarterfinal match between Peru and Bolivia in the Copa America semi-finals. On Friday, Argentina face Columbia and on Saturday, Paraguay face Brazil.
